Iboga is dedicating an EP to the deservedly lauded remix skills of Perfect Stranger, one of the outsized pillars of the venerable Danish imprint. For indeed, Yuli Fershtat has, in the recent past, distinguished himself with great remixes of RPO & David Weed, Felguk, and Liquid Soul.

The EP opens with a re-release of the original hit track Sweet Water Dolphin featured on PS’s last album Free Cloud, which has already been thoroughly reviewed in these columns.
The interest of the package therefore lies in the Janus versions of Yotopia’s hit track “Monitor”. The “cerebral mix” offers a long initial build up, interrupted by an even longer break —more than 2 mn — where the Stranger demonstrates his tension-building craft. The mental and emotional strain is heightened to an interesting climax, and lifted in the final sequences, which groove and roll on a PS trademark string-like synth rattling melody, while the bass chugs along at a slow tempo. The “demented mix” stays very close to the original in terms of global orchestration, only the mid section is replaced by a long, nerve-wracking filtered chord build-up opening onto a brief crescendo and break before the track resumes. Both versions are quite sedate and are rather introverted, meditative pieces, more fit for the introduction of a set than for the peak hours.

Perfect Stranger’s remix of the Maelstrom tune is a slow fat, low-down groover, blending the Stranger’s trademark tech prog registers. The track’s intensity concentrates on the original’s sinuous, trippy, buzzing motif, which releases its nerve tingling effects in the break where it gets a twisted transposed reworking and opens onto a swaying finish.

With their remix of “Sweet Water Dolphin”, Yotopia stays true to the original’s perky, hypnotic, highly spiralling epic piece of Tech Trance. Yet, the duo transforms the groove of the seminal’s rhythmic combo into a techier, tougher, machine gun-like bass frenzy, bristling with harder dance-floor energy and ear catching arrangements. The little bird chirp is one of them, perhaps a bit odd in this context, unless its intended to mitigate the oppressive effects of the bass’ volley. This is the first remix that has found its way into PS’s live set, an indication of the esteem in which Mr Fershtat holds it. And, without a doubt, the strongest argument in this package.
