Hello people, I just needed to consult the forum`s infinite knowledge about computer hardware for music production...

I`m about to make some investment on a desktop computer for my studio. Any recomendations?

Should I buy a computer of a given brand or should I buy the parts separately and put it toghether myself?

Is hyper threading good enough for buying a 2.8MHZ PC with HP instead of a 3.0MHZ without HP?

Sound Card?

Any information, absolutely any information, even if it is about the ideal keyboard for making music, please type it in a reply.

Thanks a lot!

Don't buy branded computers. It's nice if you're a home user, or a company buying loads of them.
Get the parts, and assemble it all yourself, or someone can do it for you (for a price?).

Anyway, since I'm a great fan of AMD (I have both AMD & Intel in my house), I'll recommend that you get a nice AMD Athlon XP 2500+ and above.
Of course you'll need a motherboard for it, check out the ABIT NF7-S, or the Gigabye something. Anything with the nForce2 chipset.
About memory - I'm using 256 MB of DDR400. I find it enough for me, although everyone say that you must have 512MB. Go for whatever you like However, notice that most motherboards today are dual ddr - 2 chip of 256 will work better than one of 512.
That's the basic stuff. I'm sure you can handle the keyboard and mouse alone

Abou the sound card - here is the big problem. There are so many brands out there, and I'm not a pro in it. Maybe some other people can help you. Just a note - I'm a happy user of the Delta 66.

Yes, AMD is good choice but pls buy a good CPU fan with it. It can make wonders to the PC believe me.
And 512 Mbytes Ram is a very good idea also.
As for HD's go for 7200 RPM with 8Mb of cache memory. I am using 80Gbyte WD HD and it works pretty good.
And as for Keyboard and Mouse...
Well it might sound weird, but it's a very essential part of purchase. Because this is your physical link with the computer and it's welth will affect your work.
So, enjoy the buy and blast some tunes.           Everyone in the world is doing something without me

One more thing people...

What works better,

a dual AMD 2400 procesor couple
512 RAM,

or

a pentium IV 3.2 GHZ
1Gb RAM?

The pentium option is actually u$300 cheaper...

Never worked with a dual processor, and I don't think that it's needed.
Get the single processor imo.

Hello, I'm new to this board. As for a sound card you should look at the m-audio Revolution for production work. I don't have one personally but I'll get one in my next upgrade. Much better than the Audigy 2. Have a look here http://www.m-audio.com/products/consumer/revolution_page1.php

I forgot to mention, it's about 85 English pounds over here

this card is ok if youre a gamer, but is poor for music production, in the beggining it doesnt have asio/easi drivers which means your programs/vst will have a HUGE latency, instead you should look at the delta series of midiman http://www.m-audio.com/products/m-audio/delta.php or emagic's emi cards http://www.emagic.de/products/hw/A62m/index.php?lang=EN

i'd definetly get one of those 64 bit amd fx processors.. they are way faster than the fastest pentium 4's.. even in 32 bit os..           "The dinosaurs became extinct because they didn't have a space program."

Don't waste your time on spending money for hardware. P4 and some Korg soundcard + Fatar as controller and Cubase will blow this world.           Sea>Israel>Ben-Gurion>Tel-Aviv>Ramat-Goa>Marom Neve
is this pure reality could we be led?
