It's true that if the percussion you picked doesn't sound right in your song, then it's probably wrong for it. But a lot of it is EQ I think. Getting to have its own space in the mix. I always remove the highest frequencies from all my percussion, it's too bright otherwise, plus when it comes to mastering it can add a bit of treble back in at the top.
I've got a track with bongos and congas and I think it sounds awesome. Check Juno Reactor - Congo Fury for greatest use of those kinda drums!
At the moment I'm facinated by Commercial Hippies - Where Dreams Come From (Album Remix)- some of those hits are genius, I wonder how they got the scratched up sounds? Any ideas. |

i don't think removing all of the high freq in percussion is the best tip!
removing the unnecessary freq is better but not all percussion need removing the high freq!
if it works for u its ok!
try to find the cleanest samples and better recorded samples u can this will make sure that they are 100% usable and adequate for farther experimentation

Is anyone synthesizing their own percussion? Just curious. I've messed around with a few programs, like Waldorf Attack, LM4, and using gated pink/white noise generators in Vanguard, but have yet to find a synthesis solution I've liked better than samples, in general.
I took have had problems with percussions being too abrassive, but I still have much to learn about EQing high frequencies in general.

Obviously I don't remove all the high frequencies of there would be no sound left, most percussive hits have a lot of detail in the upper freqs. I'm talking about the very highest, the top few milimeters of your eq low pass.
Works for me |

I'm with Tomos... remove the highest freq... and when you're doing the mixdown/mastering, add some sparkle with for instance the sonic maximizer (soft-exciter)...

You are beautiful, no matter what they say! |

I find it best to tune the percussion so it fits with your lead/bass. pichshift if its a loop or in a sampler just pitch the hits. Then apply some eq if needed. If the percussion has a lot of lowend energy i sometimes make two versions, one fullsounding for when its played without kick/bass and one with lowcut/lowshelf to be played alongside the kick/bass (so it doesnt interfere to much).
Another ting that can be cool is to pitch one version an octave up and play along the original. |

What about SonicCharge MicroTonic ?
It can go very deep in terms of tuning the sounds to fit your track.

percussion is very important thing... good rhytmics are very good to a track. use all types of percussion, depends on a style, it should be hihats O&C, claps, snares, tambourines, some drones etc...
then next important thing is EQ. you must EQ percussion very well, it needs to arrange rhytm to the track, it needs to be agressive and clear. very clear
i should also say that even the best type of percussion for each style can sounds like shit if not well EQ'ed!
hope i helped a little little
