i think alot of the major artist like son-kite or juno reactor record their percussion live..
but still if you want to make gr8 perc line u need a sampler load with variety of perc sound & pitch (high, mid, low) and add a little reverb, delay on some of the toms (i prefer on the high ones) and EQ.. |

...also little "mistakes" ( > 2 ms ) in the rhytms and small vol.-changes may sounds good.
--> simulated "live-playing"

simulated drum playing is having the percussive beat played in a "Human" way, i.e: 2ms inaccuracies, "improvisations" etc.

yeah the secret is in many factors:
* record goot instruments (bongos, congas, djembes and other percussive stuff)
* work hard on those samples you made, but don't overuse the tools: compress them slightly to reduce dynamic a bit, eq them slightly too, to make them fit your track.
* as medirium said: you should not quantize them to your grid exactly, because that makes them too static and "computer" generated. move them some audio events (depends on your sampling rate) away from the grid, try to make a groovy feeling with that, a bit shuffled.
* make more than one line, to "interact" with the other percussion line (that's done too when you play them live) and nice placed delay (not too much) fills up some gaps and can make it sound more complex and full.
* a bit reverb is good too to let it sound more realistic and not so static.
* the line should somehow interact with other elements in the track, mostly with the 4/4 bassdrum, it should make a nice balance between monotony and groove.
hmm.. that was what i can say to this topic, hope it helped a bit
sincerely, /tomas. |

Play with the velocity
this means also.. use ghostnotes ..
this is the way u can make percussion sounds like liquid. the most mistake lots of people do is that they edit the percussions to dry imo..
they only put a bongo or conga once or two times
in a loop and thats all.. i dont know any real conga player playin his instrument always with the same sound and the same velocity in a static loop. |

To reach the high standarts of the artists you mentioned you should use,the same kind of effects they use, personally i advice you to take a look at TC eletronics;Universal Audio;Lexicon wich are upper league FX you can have a positive mix with Renaissance Compressor (waves) or with L2(waves) but never will reach the quality of the LA2A or the 1176 LN or the X3 wich are all standarts in the PRO TOOLS platform ,with these ones for sure you will have the Son kite quality and phatness in your drums, save some cash and buy quality ....
Kind regards
