Right then, time for a bit of "me love you long time" sucking up posting
This thread is to identify those who are simply good at what they do. They are the drop of professionals in an ocean of amateurs and will go out of their way to help you get what you want, even though they will receive the same pay check and if they are good looking enough, a few big hugs and a beer from me when we meet on a dancefloor.

My recent experience with Colin on mastering our forth coming Disco Hooligans album has been nothing but stellar. Then man bothered to present me my options (with audio clips) regarding definition and punch vs RMS levels.
Suggested honest solutions on how much the mix would change if I wanted things fucking loud and let me make the final decision on how I want things to sound.

Its great to know that there are people like that around.

Keep doing what you're doing mate.

nice to hear that
i guess the "definition/punch vs rms values" matter is very common among mastering engineers and Colin has heard lots of times the sentence "make it LOUD" and got bored to give explanations, making two examples with audio clips is a great solution.
all the best to Coin and his work and your upcoming album

Cheers gutter (the Lagavulin awaits by the way )
I made the compromise of having a less loud master that breathes more. I guess people can always turn it up + I think its going to be better in a situation where there will be an additional compressor/limiter in the signal chain of a big P.A.

But I must say that when I got the mighty impressive loud masters I was like fuck yeaaaahh!!!!oneoneeleven

When I play a DVD via my PC I have to turn it up. If I then watch something iplayer I then have to turn it down. If I put a modern CD on I then have to turn it down again. If I then play a vinyl I have to turn it back up again.

Then sometimes I want to listen to something loud. Sometimes I want some background sound. Sometimes its late and I want to be polite to my neighbours.

If someone can't grasp that there is a volume control and that they can adjust it to taste then maybe they should be shot or at the very least imprisoned with out any form of music, TV or film.

At the end of the day you expect a non-musician or producer not to know any better. But even producers are getting sucked into this BS. People have not stopped using the volume control on their playback systems. FACT!

What Colin is doing should be standard practice. The Mastering engineer needs to stand up and say hang on a minute I am the expert here. Let me do my job, that's what you are paying me for. And maybe say to the producer, "I don't tell you how to write music, do I? So don't tell me how to do my job then"

Obviously a bit more diplomacy than that

Exactly, but the reason I started this to give the man some credit, is because he bothered to have a chat about things and back them up with a few clips.
He did not complain about me asking him to go back and turn it up and he did not say, "that's the way you want it? fine then, here's a loud mix with no dynamic range what so ever, c ya".
He was kind enough to suggest what the mix would go through, in order to achieve a very loud master and on top sent me two clips so I can choose.
It is this interactive process that gives him top marks as a professional mastering engineer, in my book...along with the crystal clear/phat sounding masters, obviously.

I want to shine some light on the whole community for always beeing responsive and openminded when it comes to introducing new production techniques and giving small tips and hints to less experienced producers.

This section (and also ambient) are very easy to moderate because in here there is not much flaming or foul behaviour and that makes this a great job.

Let there be light.

Aw come on, this isn't fair. Where's Tim Schulz's thread?

Henry Sarmiento - now there's a mastering engineer. If I could spend a day in a mastering studio watching someone work and asking them questions about their process it would be him; I have no idea how he gets his masters so loud without pumping whilst still retaining so much apparent dynamics and transient information.

Thanks for the love P&S, I must say your tracks are a joy to work on. Yours are the only mixes I've worked on in the last couple of years (apart from my own, of course hahahohohehe) which can get away with no EQ (as such ) in mastering.

A tip for those of you getting albums mastered - if the engineer sends you clips or mastered versions for you to check and approve as he goes along, check the first ones to make sure they have the level and dynamics and general sound you want. If there's anything that you think needs changing, for God's sake discuss it before the guy does the rest of the album. It's a real fucking pain in the arse when you've sent the client 8 out of 10 tracks over a period of weeks and everything's been "yeah cool they sound great"... then just when you're seeing the light at the end of the tunnel he turns round and says "Can you make them all louder/quieter" and you end up having to master the entire album twice. septa, we are not doing it our selves, there are a couple of albums (or one, not sure but its one of my favourite artists), lined up for release on that label, so when the label owner feels its the right time to promote ours, there will be an update. hopefully around may though.
