Shouldn't be big of a difference - just that you'll need to pay more for the intel at the same performance as the AMD.
Both processors will serve you right till u buy your next machine.

Yep, both will work for music. I've been using an Athlon 1800+ for several months with a Cubase-centric setup now with no problems whatsoever.
It used to be the case that AMD chips had compatibility problems, but those days are gone as far as most people can tell. Can't beat the prices of AMD cpu's either.

as i know the realy difference is that in intel you have a full life guarantee on proccesors and at amd you have only for several years |

I agree.
I think AMD is slightly better than intel in most cases, that's why I'd go for it (I am the proud owner of Athlon 1400).

Pentium 4 processors are targeted to performance at all, while AMD processors mostly targeted to multimedia and 3D performance.
Always remember you're unique, just like everyone else. |

You're talking about 6 months ago.
Intel and AMD processosrs are around the same prices today.
The big difference is about motherboards and cooling devices. Make a market research and find out the prices of everything - motherboard+cpu+fan & heatsink.
About applications, all of them support both Intel and AMD.

i agree with mike. yhe only difference is the motherboard+cpu. these what realy expensive - not the processor.

cpu is central processing unit which means the processor anywayz - recent prices:
athlon xp 2200+ --- 175$
pentium 4 2Ghz --- 185$
and of course the motherboards which are more expensive from intel - I don't know why really - maybe it's the name...

of course it's the name... it's like everything else in the market (think Nike shoes...)
an AMD processor of the same speed with an Intel processor is both cheaper and better.
and this is a fact for all speeds produced by thousands of benchmark tests.
so since you need it for creating music (and maybe games.. ) i advice you to save money and gain power by buying an AMD...

the thing here is not what cpu is best but the quality/stabilty issues involved in the implementation of hardware used in the signal path on the motherboard ie:north & southbridge,
memory management, bus speeds, cache memory and integrated peripherals not supported directly by the chipset but requiring separate bios´s.
in my experience an amd solution has only recently come up into the leage with intel in quality terms with the arrival of the nforce2 chipset
this is by far< one of the most interesting developments for the amd xp in a long time.the old nforce were among the most stable and compatible(not to mention dual bus mem controller) and it seems that the new is even better, but it is still best to wait with new tech like this as it is bound to have some issues to deal with(as do the latest chipsets from intel by the way).
a nforce2 mobo with a xp with 166 mhz bus and ddr 400 ram is definately a worthy contender to an intel solution. i use an intel machine with intel chipset and im very happy with it so far but that said, if you spend the same amount on an xp machine as i spent on my intel the price difference alone would allow you to build a powerful system.
i chose intel mainly to be on the safe side i would rather sacrifice a little bit of processing power to get 100% guarantee of industry support.unfortunately amd is still very much playing the part of underdog mainly due to delays in launching and producing the newer chips while intel has been more consistent lately.either way processing power won´t be a problem unless you insist on running everything from software synths in 24/96 quality.

if i may ad here somthing which i see as very important!
whoeveer doing a major change in his pc soon, take a deeper dive into the webpage of the soundcard you going to use and check EXACTLY which motherboard is recomended to use by each processor type with this certain soundcard, otherwise your performance wouldnt be as much as it possible, if at all.
