Alien 303: I was finishing my last track for my upcoming album "Sexy Secret" when this plugin arrived, so I gave this new plugin a try and worked with it several days. Finally I have to say Alien 303 was a good choice and is a really great plugin. I tried several things with it like tweaking monstrous and weired acid tones out of it or building acid-lead sequences and it worked perfectly. I love the handling with this tool. To be honest, the Alien 303 has a good basement for creating basslines and gives the chances to new talents to create wonderful music but I see Alien 303 more as an acid-tone-monster :-D Try it and enjoy it. It is wonderful.

hilarious lol nice one ,sexy secret haha ,this sell speech sound like a joke

I think on Vegetarian Ballad I still used Novation V-Station, but now I use mostly Alien 303 with no EQ or Compressors. Simplify, Man!

...But, yes, you can use pretty much any synth.           Penta Website - http://www.pentafiles.com

Hey Penta! Cool that you're posting in this thread...

But I can't help thinking that there's something you're not saying. The presets that come with Alien303 are just as good as any setting - no need to tweak for hours. Now, how do you make your bass sound so big? A straight comparison of a bassline - no eq or compressor - from a303 and any of your tracks really...the difference is huge. Where do all the low frequencies come from? And the punch and wetness?

I agree with aciduss, a303 feels very plastic and thin but maybe (or apparently) I'm just not doing it right...

I rarely EQ my basses, except for maybe 30hz rolloff. The punch comes from the mastering, and having a good mix...you can have the fattest bassline in the world and it will sound like ass if everything else is interfering with it...I'm sure you know this already though..

Play with distortion on your basses.. this is great for making them bigger, punchier, grungier, more solid.. lots of different outcomes..

having good monitors...good acoustics... knowing when to not give a fuck and make the rest of the track...

but in this instance, I bet you're hearing the mastering.

if it s the mastering engineer that need to bring the punch in your bassline there is something wrong in your mix man ! they have a lot less control over the sound than you in the mix . ppl gonna think mastering is why their tracks dont sound as good as some released tracks with good production by reading this but it s not the case at all . mastering can even make things sounding worst with reducing the dynamics on a good mix

Most basses do benefit from taking the mud out... low mid fqncies that are just annoying.

I also believe punch shouldn't be a mastering issue... although it can bring it up a lot more.

Something tells me we won't see Penta again here any soon... xD

yes but you can make some bass wihtout any eq if the kick fit really well with the bass, iit will hide the crap in both sound cause they will sound great togher and you will focus on that but imo as soon as you a/b the track vs a clean one it will not sound great..

I dunno, I don't really apply much processing on Alien 303. I think the punch is actually coming from a proper kick. Sometimes I use their Bass distortion plugin, but very rarely. Also, I think the mastering chain (I use either Ozone 4 or Waves) is adding something to the low end. But it is really the combination of all elements that fools you that the bass is sounding big. If you listen to it by itself it does sound a bit weak. I think the last reason is why you think my bass lines are good. I always think they could sound fatter Anyhow, working on it...
P.S. I am also experimenting with Sylenth for bass recently
P.P.S Oh yeah, and of course I tweak the 303 presets for my sounds, I almost never use them as they are

lol it's funny how surprised people get when experienced artists/blue names/etc use little or no eqing, compression, etc. honestly, less is more. i use logic's esm1 for bass and if it wasn't for the freerunning osc, i'd not even bother resampling it's gorgeous saw wave. it has about 12 or so controls, that's it - osc waves and tune, filter cutoff, decay, decay mod, velocity mod... amp decay, velocity mod... overdrive... and that's really it.

...and it sounds great. and it's not even hard to get it to sound great. i COULD eq it for hours and make it sound great, or i could leave it, choose a better kick, and have a smooth fat beautiful saw waveform (worth bouncing to have a look) with no ugly notches and artifacts. as for effects? hipass if you want, and lopass anywhere from 1000 to 3000hz or so. thas it. thas all. boom. why do people make bass so complicated?

above 3000hz? meh, i do it during breaks once and a while where only the kick and bass are playing. otherwise, don't your leads and fx just cover it right up?

and aciduss, ehhh, i'm just a cranky douche when it comes to people making more work for themselves (especially me)           Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room. ~Kurt Vonnegut
