thanks.
It's interesting process to create a psychedelic vibe in real time, interactively with other musicians.
It's a bit like a musical conversation: Someone plays something, I then respond to it, which then inspires a different sonic "answer" from someone else, which triggers other responses etc...
Makes a nice change from creating music serially...

Actually that's my favourite part of recording music with another person - live or "in the box". sometimes i'll sit down on logic with my mate and we'll each just alternate between grabbing the beers/snacks, and tweaking the controls. With a constant wacky conversation about where to go next...
Anyways, this sounds pretty solid! It's cool to see you guys in the studio in the photos, smiles all around. Definitely digging the ambient funk stylings.

Man,I have to say that I saw you in Tel-Hai a week ago,you made the day (or should I say the night)...

Nice project man, I love the quality of the sound and th musicallity, just superb. I think you guy's blend well in each others styles, keep it going!
I'd probably suggest some sort of vocal in there.
Some questions: using different computers with different DAW's, how did you keep everything in time? Did you have a main clock and midi cables connecting everything? Any sort of metronomes used for the performance recordings?

Good question.
Well first, all the instruments were recorded live into one computer.
The other laptops were used for fx processing of individual instruments, using Ableton as a glorified FX processor (a job which it does excellently btw)
When we played against tracks with a known tempo (like the tracks for the new PGC album) in order to sync delays etc. on the other laptops it's sufficient just to enter same the tempo in for each new track into Ableton at the start of recording.

Ajja (being an extremely capable techno boffin) did set up a series midi feeds (via midi cables) to enable other laptops and guitar processors to be synced to the master computer.
Cosequently Ajja's guitar processor's delay time was always synced to the master tempo. My guitar FX processor didn't have a midi in, and I was fine just entering tempos into my laptop running Ableton at the start of each track, so I didn't use mine. Not sure whether Moreno used his mid feed for the his laptop/Ableton and the desk FX.

No. But there was one track that a drum loop was used.
Other times Dan set the tempo (the old fashioned way) by playing drums which we played along with. In this case the master computer just recorded like a multitrack tape recorder recording a live band.
And interestingly (and new to me) was on several the improvised ambient pieces, a technique that the guys had used before was that the tempo was determined by a delay (which was related/sync'd to the recording computer's tempo)
For example, Dan picked up the Moreno's bass and after a bit of noodling started playing a dub line. The bass was going through a delay and so naturally he played off that rhythm and ended playing a part that was locked to a tempo (which was determined by the main recording computer) The bass was being recorded dry without the delay (giving the option to add it in later - or not). So when we started to play along, we were all in time with the computer's tempo.

So even on tracks as non-rhythmic as that, the delays and parts are still somewhat related to each other. And most importantly, the parts are recorded into the Logic project at the tempo of the sequencer.
Another example: often Ajja plays guitar parts which work off the rhythm of his delay so sometimes Dan's drumming tempo would be determined by Ajja's part - which would be then be related to the computer's recording tempo. The fact that all the parts are mutitrack recorded into a project at the tempo that the project tempo obviously makes it far easier and simpler to overdub and mix down later.
Thanks for asking some good questions knocz, it forced me to think about and define exactly what techniques were being used.
As I'm sure it's really useful information that others will find helful, I'll add this to post to my original blog.
