Hi GUys,
problem Brief:....
I have a P4 3Ghz pc, with 500 mb ram, and intel original motherboard...
i keep my pc on for long hours, as i am working on softwares, also when i am not around the PC, it is on for downloads etc...
though i shut it down for few hours if the pc has been on for over 24 hrs...
So the problem is pc shutting down automatically... when i restart i get a warning page saying "Intel Motherboard shut down due to overheating (thermal problem)..."
After which even if i keep my pc on for like 6 hours... it shutsdown automatically giving the same warning
can anybody suggest wht the problem could be (obvios to the overheating warning.. but after keeping it shut and starting after giving the pc some rest it still shuts down in no time) , and how can i get it fixed...
need ure advice....
thnxx
PS: its a new pc, purchased it 3 months back..

Check the temperature on the cpu and so on with a thermal meter. Let the door on the pc-box stay open, invest in a new cooler + more/better fans or crank up their speed a bit ;p |

there are several ways to deal with it:
1) get yourself a bigger cpu cooler with a bigger fan
2) increase the speed of the cpu fan if you can
3) tie the disk and power cables in your case together so the air flow has as little obstruction as possible; if you have a lot of wide cables around your cpu fan, it does not have enought fresh and colder air to help cool the cpu
4) install additional fans - at least one on the outtake on the back of the case, so that is drives hot air out of the case; you can get either one outtake, one out take and one intake, or, even better, two outtakes and one intake. intake fan can be on the front of the case, or on the side of it (if the case allows for it).
those fans should be as big as possible, since bigger fans will make the same air flow as the smaller ones, but with decreased speed and noise.
5) get an amd64 ))) (JUST KIDDING, DON'T KILL ME !)

check the whole system for hot air getting stuck, open the case and try... but theres is no way that the intel's stock heatsink will work well if you give so much work to a prescott like yours. you see this cpus get hot because the ammount of L2 cache, and if you dont cool it enought the performance will start to drop.
for prescott CPUs i recommend the ThermalRight XP-90 with some 92mm fan on top. This is the best heat sink avaible and the kit comes with a panaflo (silent) fan. if you can get a tornado 92mm youll get better temps.
here's a link to the product
http://www.thermalright.com/a_page/main_product_xp90.htm
hope it helps, see ya!

if he didn't do this before maybe ur fan isn't operating at the right speed? Changing the fan will certainly help u anyway... Then... Vacuum ur computer (and open up the PSU and vacuum it too) to get all the dust out, and then take a fine brush to brush off the tar/dust stille left on the fans/pcb's, do this regularly, it will keep temperature down. Then, if everything fails u can just leave the case open... That's gonna give u at least 10°C extra leeway, but it's not an elegant solution. U can also change ur case for a case that handles heat better (there are cases that are built to have a very good air-flow). And u can slow down the cpu... But that's only necessary when all the previous didn't help. And if all the previous didn't help there is a big problem with ur hardware... |

djparanormal, get a good casing (Lian Li for example, which is made of aluminium), my computer is always on and i have no probs here, and of course check the tips given here already.
also there is a sort of icy glue which you can put on the cpu, it will kewl down the processor by at least 5 degrees... good luck ! |

Getting a new CPU fan is probably the best idea.
It can be dust related also.
I take off my fan every 3-4 months and clean it from dust and replace the thermal paste, otherwise it starts screwing up.

Taking a new fan for the CPU, I recommend Zalman, you will also get rid of the noise, althought the factory cooler is supposed to be enough as goes for the heat. If you have any lights inside the case try to take them off to see what happens? |

+ The memory can get hot also esspecialy if it is a cheap one. Last, have you overclocked the CPU? |

This may sound silly but my CPU was overheating-it was sounding an alarm that I couldn't figure it out. i was told to open the computer up and blow the dust off the CPU-worked a treat!! |

well i have tried a few things...
1. opened the case, vaccumed the cabinet , rem, oved all visible dust.
2. cleaned fans.
3. put a new smps (power supply).
but the pc still shuts down giving motherboard heating warning, and wheen i restart, the cpu makes a warning sound, like a beep...
now i have sent my unit back to the manufacturer as its under warranty, hoping everythings sorted...
Although i wanna know where do i get:
1. Good cpu fan, any specific brands
2. someone mentioned some icy glue... pls give details
3. aluminium cases...
waiting for replies..
thnx

Overclocking is to make your CPU and some other components running at higher frequencies by changing some settings in the bios (if the manufacturer of the motherboard let you do this). You enter bios by pressing "del" at the time you turn on the computer.
As for coolers, I have a Zalman 7000cu and I am very happy with it (p4 2.8 no Prescott), no noise no heat. There is a bigger 7700cu which is even better (and more expensive) as well as some coolers without fans from other companies but I do not know how good they are.
The glue is a thermal paste you put on the upper side of the cpu before you place the cooler in order to achieve better thermal transer from the cpu to the cooler. With aluminium case you have lower temperature inside the case because heat goes out quicker thru aluminium than steel. I do not know what about plastic though. |

hey there,
if its a P4C (Northwood) you temp should be around 30/40 degress celcius, from idle cpu activity to full load.
if you bought a P4E (Prescott) your temps should be a little bit higher, this CPU's L2 cache makes is run hotter, but is prepaired for it,
You should check is the temp sensor of your motherboard is working, when you get an alarm and your PC is shutdown, touch the cpu heatsink and see if you can leave your hand there for a while.
If it's cool then you should disable the 'temp monitor/shutdown' feature from your BIOS, or else you should change your cpu heatsink/fan and thermal compound.
Buy a ThermalRight XP-90 (best performance heatsink for P4) or a Zalman 7000cu as Dimos said, which makes less noise as well as less cooling performance.
Also a good thermal compound (which is the thing that goes between your heatsink and your cpu and transfer the heat between them) ArcticSilver has great products like the Ceramique or the ArticSilver5...
