why would you need 1024mb on a non-gaming card?

Surely as cheap and cheerful as possible is the only way to go, unless you are gaming?

Or am I missing something?           .

It's just because it's only like 25 euro more than the 512, so... And also it was ment more of a suggestion for those who want to use the pc as a gaming desktop also...           www.xun.dk / myspace.com/xundk

I am planning on buying a new monitor, either 22" or 24". Can someone tell me what I should look for? What makes a good monitor? Contrast ratio? Brightness?

I got myself this one for x-mas ( http://www.cclonline.com/product-info.asp?product_id=18920&category_id=364&manufacturer_id=0&tid=vw222s)
I must say that I am suprised that it's so darn good. At that low price I actually didn't expect much, but it has a really great image.

Refresh rate at 2ms is a must IMO

I am getting one more with my next pc so I can run dualview...           www.xun.dk / myspace.com/xundk

Specs do not really tell you too much.
For example a monitor that on the paper have good contrast can suffer from backlight bleed in which case your blacks will not be very black regardless of what the panel is rated at.
A monitor with fast response time might suffer from inverse ghosting due to overdrive processing, which is worse than the ghosting you would get with a slower response.

All really cheap monitors is using TN panels which does not have very good viewing angles and colour reproduction.
If you can afford a PVA or MVA panel that can really be worthwhile if you spend a lot of time in front of the screen.

The only advantages with a TN apart from the lower cost is the faster response times, but you will not notice the difference between a 2ms TN and a 6ms *VA even if you are a hardcore FPS gamer, and in that case input lag will be more of a factor.

I have a Huyndai W241D which I'm very happy with, and if you can find one they are quite cheap for a PVA.
Another cheap *VA screen is the LG L245WP-BN with an MVA panel.

Also Eizo have lowered the prices a lot on some models, and even if they are a bit more than the above mentioned models they seem to be very good value.
Eizo hand picks the panels to make sure they all are good and calibrate them before delivery.

this is this companys hi end studio pc for 2599e

http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/7049/fatdatahiendstudiopccn8.jpg

this is our hi end studip pc for 2.122e thats better than theirs and with 2 raptors in raid 0 for optimum hd performance and much faster 4g ram and 2 widescreen 22 inch montiors and windows vista tha has now the new fix tha 32bit windows os can normaly see 4g ram.

ofcourse we offer the same setup and tune for audio work plus fulll support from our daw forum.

+we can add the same rack studio case from antec like they do with an extra in the price of 300e (ofcourse removing the 167e for the coolermaster cosmos case)
so its again alot cheaper and much better value for money in all ares (plus the pc is silent cos the cpu cooler runs on 10db)
u can check all the components in the internet make ur comparisons and see that big companies sell name and not value!

with expenses to send it in europe will cost u about 2.350e this is even cheaper than theirs by 250e and our pc is more silent and a better performer.

they are way to overpriced.

2599 you can get an mac octo for thatand not the basic package i might add... very very expensive! don't see what's the point of having a pc to spend so much.

Mine is a beast and I haven't spent anywhere near this amount to build it.

As soon as you reach 2000 Euro you MUST buy a MacPro since you get very good hardware MacOS AND Windows.
Spending more than 2000 on PC hardware would be a BIG mistake!!!

Vista has no future, buy a mac anyway. I will and I have been a PC User since 1988.
If you still want windows you can run it on macs too.. so it makes no sense to buy pc hardware anymore. Its just restricted.
I know people who use imacs for 1000Euro for music professionaly... todays CPU performance allows that.

No hassle, mac hardware simply works. No building, no motherboard review reading, no prblems and you do not even have to switch Operating System. You still can use windows.

There is only one reason to buy PConly Hardware: If you get it considerably cheaper than mac hardware.

I build my computer my self following the recommendations from this thread. I spend about a 1000 us dollars and could not be happier. The computer is a beast and I don't think anyone would need any more power then this. It' not even over clocked. Its very easy to assemble the computer yourself and anyone with a brain can do it.
I spend $800 on the following which i bough from http://www.newegg.com/

psu: CORSAIR CMPSU-550VX ATX12V V2.2 550W Power Supply

cpu: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz LGA 775 Quad-Core Processor Model BX80562Q6600

mobo: GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS4 Rev. 2.0 LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Ultra Durable II

cd: PLEXTOR 52X CD Burner Black IDE Model PX-240A/IBP-BL

hard drive: Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500GB

ram: corsair Ram 2GB Kit DDR2 800 4-4-4-12
all from the above are top notch and great choice if not the best.

The cpu cooler is the stock one that came with the cpu. I don't know if i should upgrade..? Works fine..
In future I might upgrade to thermaltake IFX-14 which is supposedly the best fan cooler out of them all when it comes to cooling says Tom.
http://www.tomshardware.com/us/
there is a comparison chart there...

I used a graphic card from some older computer and the case is Cosmos Cooler Master which is a must.. $200 us dollars but its worth every penny.. Totally silent and it even has acoustic silencing foam to keep the noise out plus it puts a smile on my face every time I look at it..
No tools required plenty of space to work.
http://www.coolermaster.com/microsite/Cosmos/

So anyone thinking about getting a new DAW should look into getting the parts listed above if you are looking for a silent but " off the hook" computer.
I think that spending 2599e or 2.122e is way too much for a PC. Might as well get the new MacPro but keep in mind that Mac parts cost much more and Apple plays around with their customers a lot. They will use monitors that will fit one connection one year and then go swap them next year and that goes for other parts too. So keep that in mind. The Imac is a dissposible machine. No way to upgrade and they have serious problems with their screens and apple wont admit it. In the Ipod you change the battery yourself . My girlfriends Ipod just stopped working and its only 1yr old. My friend works for apple as a technician and he says he would never buy their products. He says they make them to brake.
I still love my Ipod though.
The new Macpro offers room to grow so it's not a bad choice if you are thinking about spending so much money on a DAW.
But for a $1000 you can have pc that you can always upgrade when you feel the need and with all the money that you saved go get yourself a Virus TI, well save some more money then go and get it.

Another thing is that all of the parts come with 3 to 5 year warranty so that is a big plus and another reason why building a pc yourself is a great choice.

apple makes a very healthy profit on parts , you don't need to purchase stuff with apple... they sell the same stuff you could get from scan for example.... so by getting the basic package and buying ram and hd seperatly you do save a lot of money.
that said I think the basic pack octo of mac pro is very resonably priced. If you've got the money go for it !
