I have to agree with what has been said here. There are some overlooked components which are quite critical. Power supply being one of them. Memory etc. I'd suggest looking at www.tomshardware.com they have benchmarks for most available hardware and compares performance to other relevant pieces. By researching from what others have said and looking at the facts on toms you should be able to come up with a machine that fits your budget, and will be able to do the audio projects you want to do. Be sure to get good memory, power supply, motherboard, and of course processor. Actually be sure to get good everything When I say good I mean quality and reliable not necessarily the best specs. |

Does anyone know any good (cheap) sites, where I can put together my own pc.
Like I select video card, cpu, ram, hdd, motherboard. etc... And then they will put it together and send it?
I just want to see if it's cheaper outside denmark...

I agree about buying components seperate, in fact I'm in the middle of doing it myself.
About CPU, I would hold off just a little longer and look at the new 45nm quad core that is coming out.
From what I understand it runs a lot cooler then the old quad cores cooler=slower fan=less noise.
Also, if like me you are a hardened gamer and simply can't afford two PCs or entertain the thought of not having a stupidly powerful GCard, I can recommend this card
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=747240
Which I have just purchased. It isn't silent, there is a bit of turbine noise, but nothing that a decent case won't deal with. It is however ridiculously powerful, and compared with anything else in the 8800 range incredibly cool and quiet. If you HAVE to play games on your DAW (which I do (so nnnnneeeeeer)) then you'll struggle to do better. Make sure you get the one with this cooler on it though, there is a previous version which had a problem with the RAM.
Otherwise, I would reiterate the excellent advice already given, and draw particular attention to the quality quietness of the PSU, and case fans which I have also just replaced, and I'm staggered at how much difference that has made.

I've just recently put together a computer following advice from this thread and I couldn't be happier. The case Cosmos 1000 is amazing and totally silent. Highly recommended!!! This was the first time I ever touched the insides of the computer, but its a piece of cake to put it together. The only thing that I can hear from the case is the graphic card, which a I will exchange for something more silent. So anyone thinking about upgrading their DAW should just follow advice from this thread because there is some great advice in here.
One question..
Is it possible to make two different computers on one machine, kinda like a dual boot? I want to use one for gaming and one for music. |

Why not get the sparkle then which is passive cooling http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3165
Or if your looking for midrange and cooler card, a Radeon 3870 passive cooled Card http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Powercolor/HD_3870_SCS3/1.html

I considered the sparkle - But I've heard bad things about it - especially with fans that don't shift huge quantities of air - ie quiet ones. Plus that monster heatsink on the back can be a problem with some mobos as well as potentially fouling CPU cooling airflow. Only a year warranty tells you everything you need to know - this part under load runs over 20c hotter then standard in a well ventilated case. **BANG** waiting to happen.
Basically, with standard components the GPU core of the 8800gt chucks out 90c under load - that isn't the sort of component that looks to be suited to passive IMO.
I don't know about the Radeon to be honest - haven't read any reviews.
The card I've got is quiet, I can tell you that much from first hand experience.

Yeah the 8800GT card is kinda powerhungry, id consider that card thou since the airflow in my P-180 case is very good, i actually installed a watercooling system for the CPU, so the only thing that generates heat in the upper chamber is the GPU-card. The review i posted indicated that the sparkle card was kinda hot but with a 120mm fan on it and good circulation your pretty good i think

Hehe yes, I've gone P182, and as I say, I did consider it, long and hard as it happens, and in the end I went for the gigabyte cos its get far lower power consumption then the standard.
Yeah, I'd love to see a passively cooled version of the gigabyte board, because the temps on the board are insanely low for a 8800gt - that I would have purchased.

Honestly, I think you are better off putting that extra money into the other components and a nice phat 24inch monitor.
But if you are going to overclock the nuts off it then, perhaps, but you'll also need more expensive RAM. Bear in mind the extreme range is getting overhauled as we speak.

About the 8800GT it's really no problem cooling it passively.
I'm using an Accellero S1 and it's a lot cooler than with stock fan (about 55c under max load) and my case is not especially well ventilated (cheiftec dragon with 3x80mm noctuas).
The Sparkle design doesn't seem very good though.

What I am looking for is a complete studio pc. I have the one i'm on atm. for gaming. So the graphics card is not that importaint. I was thinking of just putting in a Geeforce 8600GT.
For silence, I was thinking of getting a water cooling kit, but it looks a bit hard to install...
About the 45nm core. It sounds cool. And I am also gonna wait 2-3 months before buying my new pc, just to see what great stuff they come up with...

This is a 8600GT passive cooled graphics card with 2x DVI outputs from ASUS. What do you think? I am not a gamer

I think it looks like a great card, and the 1024MB version is not that expensive.
