Its time for me to upgrade my daw
so from reading this thread I have a good idea of what to go for. So i 've decided:
case: cosmos 1000
psu: CORSAIR CMPSU-550VX ATX12V V2.2 550W Power Supply
cpu: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz LGA 775 Quad-Core Processor Model BX80562Q6600
mobo: GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS4 Rev. 2.0 LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Ultra Durable II
cd: PLEXTOR 52X CD Burner Black IDE Model PX-240A/IBP-BL
hard drive: Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3500630AS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
graphics - connect 3d ati 3850
ram: corsair Ram 2GB Kit DDR2 800 4-4-4-12
cpu cooler: Noctua NH-U12F
basically everything orange recomends!
tnx orange : )
is there anything else i am going to need to get this system running except the os?
and what would you recomend? windows xp tiny?
i am very close to buying this setup but would be helpful to know if this is a good choice and is there anything else i need to look out for? this is going to be my first self build computer but i have done some research and think i am ready for the job!
tnx for advice |

yeah i am looking forward to see what a quad cpu can do too because i am using pantium 4 3.3gigs and one gig ram on a laptop right now and i can barely get to finish a song. its very annoying to hear clips in audio couse mycomputer suxxxx. sux having to take of freaquency annalyzer of channels to save cpu and having to bounce everything to audio even though you think you might want to tweak it even further. hopefully it wont be an issue with the new daw. |

I've come in a bit late here, but here's my 'random guy on the internet' opinion. And it if it helps sway even one person, I know it'll be a post well made.
In this forum the only option that should be suggested is the DIY route (even with laptops there are some websites that let you pick specifications - http://www.novatech.co.uk for Brits is very good)
If you're smart enough to learn music production software, you're smart enough to build a computer to use for that purpose.
Fixing computers is my business. I've got to know every brand.. all I can say is that the last thing you want to do is buy a branded computer.
Every manufacturer skimps on the quality of parts to keep costs down (ESPECIALLY Dell!!)
**********
If you want a new DAW, at best you can build a better PC for the same price as a branded model, at worst it will cost a bit more but with benefits...
No useless proprietary manufacturer software
Generally more upgradeable
Satisfaction of self build and future upgrades
You know whats in it / installed
No skimping (Brand PSU's and mobos fail constantly)
You can pick quiet fan/PSU components and overclock if you want.
Save on useless non-DAW related extras (Printer, soundcard, fancy case, speakers, modem, floppy drive. things you already have - mouse, keyboard, screen etc.)
Pick a non-gaming graphics card (The more you spend on a branded PC, the more will go toward the graphics card - which is irrelevant in a DAW)
Warranty applies to individual parts - for example Intel processor warranty is 3 years, a branded computer may have a 1 year warranty. if you have the packaging, you can replace individual parts yourself easily.
**********
I can't stress it any more than this post... but always build your own PC! As someone that fixes computers, all I see is the inside of brand name boxes.. and they are not impressive!
There are some excellent suggestions in posts so far - google, review, decide!

It will blow it away. You can be sure of that.
I went from P4 3.2ghz to Core2 2.4ghz. Projects that were maxing out the old CPU barely registered. I went totally overboard initially and having so much power with effects and synths briefly negatively effected my productions!

Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ,i think it s 7200.11 right now? the 10 is not a good hd but the 11 is ok. also for the cpu cooler check ifx 14 and ultra 120 i think both perform better than the noctua ,noise/cooling ratio . |

tnx for the replies guys. one thing i am not sure of is which windows to get?`i read here a lot of people using windows xp tiny but i am not sure if that is going to be good for my system because i plan on maxing it out with memory but i am not sure how much of it windows xp tiny can support..... i also saw that there is windows xp 32bit and windows xp 64bit which supposedly works faster! what do you guys use for your daw and what do you recommend? |

Tiny XP is the same as normal XP in almost every way, except its had all the useless services removed.
See google nlite for more details.
It won't affect the amount of memory support.
XP64 is for 64bit processors (Core2 chips are capable) But you'll need to make sure ALL the drivers for everything you plan to use on it are available in 64bit format. Which is unlikely.. and the reason I stuck with regular 32bit.

thank you all for advice. i am assuming that windows xp tiny is 32bit as well.. please correct if wrong... so i am going to go with windows xp tiny. i read that it comes with features that i dont plan to use like the internet explorer and other things. i plan on using the computer just as a daw, no internet because i just got over having to reinstall windows because of a trojan that kept renaming its self and i couldnt get rid of it. veryy very annoying... i already have a slow computer and with the trojan using more memory the computer was useless. i am very excited about building this computer.. thank you all for helping out hopefully something good comes out of it |
