Hello!

I'm opening this topic because i'm courius about how is the "party mood" in S.A.

What I know is that Johannesburg is a very violent city (or i'm wrong about that?) and about the rest of the country? And how it reflects on the partys?

Hi ArSoX,

Don't believe everything you read - Joburg is a crazy place, and nowhere as beautiful as Cape Town, but its vibrant and fully in tune with the 'new' South Africa And latest crime stats put Cape Town up there in terms of violent crime, but overall crime is down. Latest stats here:
http://www.iss.co.za/CJM/stats0904/index.htm

The trance scene here in Joburg is up and down, its been very quiet the past couple of years since Starspine left for Spain and Lori/Lunatech backed off organising parties. Even then parties were small, never went above 400-500 people. But Red Eye Productions are picking up the underground party scene, this weekend they have a party planned (below) and a festival beginning of November, bringing up Hydrophonic and Shift from Cape Town so its looking up. The psy trance scen in Cape Town is well established and supported (Earthdance drew 3500), allways good and worth getting down there as often as possible for! The Joburg psy scene has not latched onto the daytime thing yet, which is a problem.

The dance/club scene here is terrible, commercial cheese, the worst imaginable. But House music is very popular with most South Africans, generally the slower/deeper soul stuff is what black people like and that scene is big and healthy but parties are mainly boozing affairs. Whites in the main stream go for boring commercial trance/house all cheese imho. Hip Hop is quite popular, given a lot of air time which brings me to radio stations, and most are not worth listening to, they only play commercial play listed muzak only a few black stations play 'decent' music. There are no pirate stations, although a few local ones from University campuses manage to have good music but range is very limited.

Psy trance is mainly a 'white' thing but it's not at all racist, everyone is welcome its just that the bpm does not appeal to the 120 bpm house massiv. There are also small and underground breaks / drum'n'bass / techno scenes in Joburg and Cape Town. People here is Joburg are scared to try anything different, and thats another problem. But we are quite chilled since we have seen it all ....

But here is the hope for the future:

Oops sorry I forgot .. there is also a small psy scene in Durban (on the warmer Indian ocean), and also some trance friendly places along the wild coast (former Transkei homeland).

A good web site for SA trance scene is www. 3am.co.za and also www.bomelakiesie.co.za

No convincing necessary for Boom 2006!!! We was at Boom last year, and Freedom this year. I really enjoy partying with the Portuguese.

If you are heading to South Africa for a visit, Cape Town really is the place to go. Joburg is interesting if you are a culture vulture and u might come past this way to visit Maputo and Mozambique, although no trance there, its a great place, bit like Brazil: nice mixed up Latino party culture. There is a TAP Air Portugal flight from Lisboa that stops in Maputo and Jhb, then it's a cheap flight down to Cape Town via 1Time or Kalula

Let me know if I can help with any further info.
