i used to go crazy with partitions in the past, but now realize it's better to keep shit simple. the ultimate would be to have your os/apps, samples, and projects in their dedicated drives. otherwise, i would just stick with 2 partitions: one for os/apps and one for data. as long as those 2 are separated, it will be easy to ghost and restore the os/apps. and if that partition gets corrupted, your data should still be ok.

From what I've been told there's no benefit to partitioning drives, it's the same thing as creating a new folder.

well, that's not necessarily true. if you have a big drive and as time progresses and you keep adding and deleting files, it will get fragmented. after a while, you could have some files which have parts stored closer to the inner edges of the platter (closer to the spindle) and parts stored on the outer edges. so when you try to access the file, the head would have to travel greater distance to access the file, potentially jumping back and forth. when you partition, you are shrinking this range.
now, whether that's critical or not is another thing. some try to squeeze all the milliseconds they can get. others couldn't care less.
so in general, people partition the drives for performance and/or for easier backup strategies.

You still have to de-frag a partition to avoid it from being corrupted though.
It may not happen as often, but the result of not doing it is much more of a pain.
Also, as far as I know, you don't decide where on your disk the partition goes- so technically you could have all your ableton stuff towards the center and whatever you partitioned out on the edge. http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

sure. but there's still a difference between the head traveling from one end to the other of a 100 gig partition vs. a 500 gig partition.
defragging often is always a good thing, regardless of the size of the partition.

sure you do. the order in which you partition your disk is the order they will be on the physical disk (from ouside in). so your very first partition will always be the fastest, since it's near the outer edge and the head can read more data while staying in the same spot.
however, most people would probably not notice the difference because it's so small (though, it's still there). https://soundcloud.com/dead-end-dance

I currently have 3 partitions on my 1tb disk - 1 os + installations and 2 with everything else.
But I really don't see any point of having more than 2 partitions, 1 for os, so if it fcks up you can clear it without damaging your other files and 1 for your other files

since he`s on a mac , there is no need to defrag the Hd..
Osx actualy does it itself in regular frequencys..
i would just do it for backup purposes and/or like mentioned above for restoring the Os part more faster etc..

I use this setup for two years already, without problems with performance and usability, and without re-installing Windows:
3 physical drives:
1) OS
2) All music software and files
3) All other data (music, movies, program files, backups)
