CD versus digital is a real question of choice.
I guess there is positive and negative sides to both format.
As a label, we use to release CDs before, and now we just look for digital.
Why is that? Well, it's quite simple, digital gives a label the opportunity to stay 100% independent from distribution. When you release a CD you have a lot of expenses just to manufacture it (I'm talking about quality audio CD, not the "recorded" from my computer one), then you have the problem of shipping and , most of all, you usually have to go through distribution if you expect minimum visibility in stores and hope for a few sales. At the end, who's making any profit from a CD : definitely not the label nor the artists, but instead the manufacturer and the distributor are making the maximum margin on it without having done much... In fact having done nothing 'cause both the manufacturer and the distribution don't give a shit about your sales figures : they work on quantity, not quality.
So, saying that, the digital offers a real alternative to small labels as well as to artists to break free from distribution and physical support.
I agree holding a nice CD with a good cover a artwork is a real pleasure, but this pleasure comes to a high cost and too many problems.
Hopefully when a label/artists reaches a good level of visibility and sales ('cause it's all about money), CDs can be good when well distributed and usually are available on digital format in parallel.
So, in my opinion, it really depends on the label size and politics. Yet I believe DIRECT from the artist/label digital gives a great opportunity to indie artists and labels.
Talking about selling plateforms like I*unes and all the others : well, they are the exact same vultures you find in CD distribution... In fact they are even worst as they usually only sale MP3 because they don't give a shit about quality. Paying .99 for a mp3 is a pure rip off in my opinion because you get shit quality and still pays to much for it (and it has nothing to do with the artist nor it's talent, MP3 is just a shit format that is not good quality). I*unes is making millions $ with MP3 and totally bringing the idea of quality music to the garbage... Making generations of illeterate music consumers but I'm not gonna start bitching in I*unes and the rotten A*ple policies as it should be a all subject by itself.

A part from House/Deep House and Tech House (The market is way better in regard of sales and people actually buying music) I will only release my downbeat/experimental projects for free. Then people can decide if they want to donate or not and I can do whatever I like to do without feeling pressured into feeding the Industry with what the labels/distributors believe they think they know when it comes to what people want. This way I can feel truly free to experiment as much as I like without having to live up to any expectations of what my music should sound like. Ahhhh sweet freedom

They both pollute, and digital might be more polluting than physical CD because behind digital you have servers, computers, cables, electric energy 24/24-7/7 : so when you add it all, the environmental impact of digital is way higher than physical CD . Because you don't see it does not mean it's not there...           "we just get by however we can, we all gotta duck when the shit hits the fan"

I am not very knowledgable on the issue, but them servers and PCs would be running 24/7 anyway tho, no?
I mean people use computer for their day to day tasks. They'd just download music running on energy that is spent even if they wouldn't?

Peace out.

Actually you are wrong Nabi-Records. Manufacturing of CD's pollute way more. As a label you should understand the "life" of a manufactured CD from leaving your artist's studio until ending on a shelf in a shop (or warehouse in the case of online shops).

In many Manufacturing plants the music is still delivered via snail mail on master CD's (some but still few accept digital transfers of the music). So here comes the first pollution. Transportation. And if it's send overseas it goes via Air (in rare cases via sea). Even more pollution.

Then the music arrive to the plant. A plant that are operated 24/7 = use of a lot of electricity 24/7. Now they will make the glass-master including use of chemicals (The glass master was made partly by using various chemicals).

Then the actual print onto the CD's (the CD's also had to be produced using various chemicals and plants) is happening including artwork print etc. Again use of a lot of electricity and also ink which actually pollute a lot. And not to forget the artwork being printed out from the graphic designer on paper (trial prints) and by the plant (booklets etc.) = use of paper (a lot per year).

When the product is ready and assembled (incl. whatever you use as a protection cover = usually plastic = pollution) then we come to shipping. Use of cardboard etc., transportation by land and air or sea.

The result is way more pollution than a simple digital release.
