Para Halu-Wide Range (Zaikadelic Records, January 2008)
Para Halu's latest compilation tracks have been moving in a melodic direction. Wide Range continues working in that style, but contains some tracks more appropriate for the darker hours as well. Although three individuals worked on this album-Adam and Andras from Para Halu, and Peter from The Path project-each track is individually credited, with Adam and Peter doing most of the tracks. Andras' two tracks are both closer to the old Para Halu style, so it's easy to understand why after this album, Para Halu is just Adam.
Flash Signal-The opening track clearly establishes that this album will be exploring different territory than the previous Para Halu full lengths. Flash Signal is probably the most melodic Para Halu work that has been released-it is even more melodic than tracks like Shiva's Breakfast and Eternity. Peter uses atmospheric pads and percussion to create a very emotional intro. Some techno-influenced riffs take us to the kick, bass, and melody. The bass also has a techno-influenced feel and the timbre is somewhat in the same ballpark as the bassline from Baharica Biknindo off the "On the Right Path" compilation. The track is split in two halves by a break that is a little too long for my taste. Fortunately, when the beat comes back, it has a new synth lead that gives the track a more psychedelic edge. An emotional outro closes the track, creating symmetry with the intro. Very beautiful and unique track.
Naplement-An ominous intro gives rise to another emotional track, this time from Adam. The timbre of the bassline and melodic aspects bring to mind Terminator's work that was released on the Deja Vu Fabrique album. Various melodic elements work in harmony with one another. In contrast to the euphoria of Flash Signal, the melodic work has a mysterious, epic feel. Particularly after about three minutes, there are quite twisted noises accompanying the melodic elements.
Patternoia-With this track, Andras represents with something more akin to the older Para Halu. Dark noises, weird noises, and playful noises are all present. The bassline is driving, yet the percussion and noises create a somewhat groovy feel. Patternoia, along with Andras' other track, Rollertoaster, are the most straightforward, conventional tracks on the album-they abandon the risks taken on many of the tracks in favor of solid night/twilight material, and while the greatness of this album is due to the risks taken, it's good to have some excellent non-melodic material like this to round it out.
Babylon (album version)-For the first time in the album, Adam uses melodies to create a dark and spooky atmosphere. Pads and percussive leads are the main elements until 2:24 when we get a noise that seems somewhere between a lead and a pad. The new noise enhances the sinister vibe. At 5:34 or so, we start to hear one of the trademarks of Para Halu, the crazy noises underneath the main elements of the track. Overall, I imagine this track as what Para Halu would have created as the soundtrack to Castlevania.
Methedrine Wave-A processed kick and pad starts us out, when the bass and kick begin, it's a fairly minimal track. The main element is a percussive synth hit with a heavy phaser/flanger effect. At 1:40 an atmospheric noise rises in volume to be the main element of the track. The percussion builds during a break, and this atmospheric noise continues during and after this break. At 3:25, this noise disappears and the track continues in its minimal fashion. Once again, I'm hearing a techno influence. There's a long break with a gutteral-voice sounding synth without any kick or bass, then at 5:10 we get a groovy rhythm and the gutteral voice synth continues with some modulation. The atmospheric noise from earlier accompanies the gutteral voice synth to outro. Peter's tracks are now a solid 2 for 2 in unconventionality.
Cybertalp-Another track from Adam. Up til 1:55 we have the makings of another Terminator-style track with beautiful atmospheres and melodies. After that point, we have a wonky guitar-sounding line that is somewhere in the realm of Suomi and Gi'iwa style goofy mayhem.
Rollertoaster-Andras' other contribution to the album. Very similar to Patternoia in most aspects, except for a little bass movement around 3:07. High quality but conventional night/twilight "darkpsy" material.
Blackhole-Peter seems to show an interest in ambient with this track, which forms a long intro to Radar. Very spacey, with a repeating high pitched tone that is repeated throughout Radar. Nice use of atmospheres and bass. No kick during this one.
Radar-Peter builds on the intro with a kick, bass, and the high pitched tone. There seems to be a subtle previewing of the melody from the last portion of the track, tucked down in a lower frequency range. Totally beatless break starts at 1:59. Various weird noises play, mostly solo'd with some atmospheres behind them. Pretty fun noises, they seem to be a Rorschach test for whoever hears them, as various listeners have described them differently. Duck noises are my favorite description so far. At 2:51 at big ol' ravey breakbeat comes in. A little after four a melody is slightly previewed, before it comes to the foreground at 4:20. Sometimes it is juxtaposed with another lead, and sometimes not.
Alien Symphony-The track begins with a minimal style featuring a few noiess, a kick, and a fat, groovy bassline. Around 1:00, we get a brief hint of the melodic pads that will become a major element of the track later. Typical metallic skittering noises are abundant. Above this is a groovy synth. The track goes into a break at 3:38, and the break ends with a nice processed bass riff. After the break, long melodic notes create a suspenseful atmosphere to accompany the metallic noises. Things are really kicking when the lead synth comes back. At 5:55 the track becomes more euphoric. Lots of crazy noises continue under the euphoria, giving the track the necessary balance between beauty and twistedness. Very nice structure and pacing throughout the development of this track.
Overall, an excellent album, especially for those of us who enjoy a little power in the morning, but are pleased to hear some melodic work to accompany all the crazy noises. That said, it is very nice to have Andras' tracks to round out the album, and his contributions to Para Halu will surely be missed. However, what makes this album stand out is the creativity and risks taken by doing something different. There is a significant advance in the quality of the melodic work on this album over the recent morning style compilation tracks. The balance between power and melody is very difficult for artists to pull off, and Para Halu is perhaps the only living producer consistently doing so now. My hope is that in the future, there will be more tracks that have intelligent structures and sophisticated melodies, building on tracks like Alien Symphony. I also look forward to hearing more work from The Path, as Peter's tracks are probably the most unconventional on the album.
Big Boom to Zaikadelic and Para Halu, best wishes for the upcoming "The Future Sound of Para Halu" album.

Track 3 & 7 are the closest to the older para halu style and hence the stand-out tracks for me. The rest doesn't really appeal to my taste buds...
All the best for the next release friend

For sure Ocelot comes to mind-the bulk of his tracks seem to be more day or night oriented, rather than a fusion of the two imo, but occasionally he has tracks like Whirligig or Thoughts per Second that I think pull of beautiful emotion but also power.
I'm tempted to say Electrypnose, but like Ocelot, I think most of his tracks either fall generally into the "dark" or "morning" category rather than combine the two.
A lot of tracks from the comps the Meaning of Life, Dream Theatre, Namaste from Russia (the first one), and Acidsport all have some tasty powerful night style songs that incorporate melodic leads and/or pads.
Of course, imo the masterpiece of this style is the Deja Vu Fabrique album.
Samadhi also has dabbled in melodies, curious to get my copy of the new split album. |

I loved this album. It was so much beyond just darkpsy. It really has a wide range. It really takes you through a lot of different feelings and styles. I couldnt ask for more. Nice sound quality too.
