hey guys ,

in fl studio , there is an option to select between circular and triangular panning law ...

when switched to triangle frm circular law , the volume output in fruity goes up considerably !!

so i would really appreciate , if some here could temme whiich panning law to use and the differecne and y ???

also in sx 2 / nunedo .. there is panning law option [ -3db , -6db @ centre ] ...

but any one knows which one of them corresponds to triangle and circular laws ?

any help on this would be greatly appreciated !

ok., let me try

normaly panning a mono source equaly divides the energy over two channels.,

so if you add both channels together you have exactly as much energy as the original mono source.,

but panning a stereo source is different.,
it decreases the amplitude of one of the two inputs untill only one is heared.,

the problem:
if you pan something to the middle then both outputs are at full energy.,
but if you pan hard to left or right then you have only half the energy (only one channel playing at full energy).,

i think this is called triangular panning.,

but the ppl at fruity have some kind of algorithm to divide the energy differently.,

the more you pan to the middle the more the level is reduced.,

that is the circular panning thing.,

if you think about it.,
with 'normal' stereo panning, if you pan hard one way the result is half the energy.,
so that's 6db lower than panning to the center, right?

if you gradually decrease the level (depending on the position of the pan pot) so that it is at -6db at the center then you get equal-energy panning.,
(and i mean -6db total, so that's -3db per channel)

i think this is how they do it.,
personaly i think there are pro's an cons to this method., you should try imagining eventual problems you might get from using one method and decide if you can live with it.,
also, they have a different effect on how the sound appears to move through the stereo field.,

triangular is more like side to side., (like standing in front of train rails)

circular is more like having something going around your head, so the rails bend around you., ., kindof.,

.., so the cubase people have this trick too!,
they lower the levels by 6db when the panpot is in the center position, increasing it to 0db at the sides.,

so now when you pan at the center it's exactly as loud as when you pan to left or right., (both cases are at -6db total.,)

they also got an option at -3db ., so that's something in between.,

greets.,
aka.,

---

there is no good or bad.,
there is only the spoon.,
in fact, there is no spoon at all.,.,

i cant sey that i dont agree with zildoggo hes right
for my opinion circular panning works great in both sx an fl because you have a stady signal when iys panning aswell in the middle but always deppents of what you want to do if you want it around your head use circular iff you dont use the tringular

have a good music making

which is better (in FL) for Mixing with left&right monitors?

What happens when i convert to .wav? Does it keep the effect? or is it only for playback output.

ok, for those who'd like to know (i dont know maybe it's common knowledge).
after some research i made a semi-conclusion

the Panning law is most useful when you have panning automation on a track. (especially when bouncing to mono for broadcasting purposes).

I've read how it can magically create better depth perception. BUT, what about FX plugins that uses stereo for depth perception? Did the developers of these plug-ins take into account that different DAWs use different pan laws?
Some say that the panning law have adverse effects on certain synths.

I'd like some more insight.
What do u guys use for panning law 0, -3, -6db?

I feel like i'm getting better stereo image with 0db. I can't say about the depth.

THEY say it's a matter of taste, but is it really

+ i think, because i adjust the stereo separation knob on some channels, on the FL mixer (without the LAW:),, it feels like i'm getting better mono from the mono content,, like the kick& bass, which i merge to 100% mono.

perhaps the circular curve is to round/wide at the center.

never tried the "preset" panning on FL..i always edit my own events ..the triangle its a more directly panning focusing the sound to fast to the side its shows in the drawing making the volume up           Greetings Earthlings!

I'm not talking about presets.
?edit your own events? - u have the wrong idea. i know what you are on about. panning envelope curves

its about the circular panning law. in FL, its ON or OFF << globally

or i don't understand what u r saying
