it may be my imagination, but i hear many sounds in tracks oriented to a certain side. somewhere offcenter.... i think its on purpose and enhances the 3d sound of the track and its "psyness".
am i hearing things and everything is in the middle? or am i right and things are oriented panning wise on purpose?
i tried to do some forced panning on things, they dont sound natural... can anyone explain more about this?

ok so what does that mean? that you place your synth simply in 25% pan to the left or to the right? or you play with the pan on the delay?
when i do "artificial" panning it sounds not right.

Maybe the lead is panned to one side and the delay to another side?

Gadi,
If u will listen to Jazz or Classical music arrangements u many times will notice guitars panned to the max ( check out the 'Friday Night in San Francisco - Al Di Meola, Paco De Lucia and John McLaughlin )
Basically this little trick used to enlarge the stereophonic image of the track. It makes it feel 'wider' and also u can stick more stuff in...
How can u use it in trance music production? Well in many ways i guess. First of all u can save some disk space when u create MONO files and pan them and thus create the stereophonic illusion. Usually this is really recommended for percussions and hi hats etc.. lets say u pan the open hat 35 to the right and pan the close hat 25 to the left. u got yourself a very nice stereophonic image. Add to this a snare drum 45 on the left and a shaker 40 on the right and your track sounds completely different than putting all those one on top of the other in the middle.

Listen to old track like Beatles - Strawberry Fields Forever. Drums panned hard left! Strings, brass and guitar panned hard right! And it really works for some reason! |

Beatles is a crazy group if u talk about it!!! Take a listen to any Beatles cd on two systens: one regular stereo and other mono.... Man, itīs CRAZY!! So different!!!
Btw, I canīt understand how can I make a "whooshe" for example sounding like surrounding... I know itīs pan automation, but I canīt fell if as I wanted to...

I use panning indirectly, by delaying one channel sligthly - this creates an enveloping effect. In the same way, stereo-delay, where one of the delays (left or right) is delayed ever so slightly creates the same "the-sound-is-coming-from-inside-my-head" effect.
Tasbeat, I have to comment on your signature... A is not only 440 Hz, but somewhere in the vicinity, and it varies a little - besides A is also (somewhere near) 55, 110, 220, 880, etc Hz - nitpicking, I know, but still..... - And you're right, automating panning is nice!

i read somewhere (don't know where sorry) that the sounds are panned to give them a more natural feel...
usually, in drums, the kick is at the center, the hats are on one side, the toms & cymbals are on the other side etc.
I maybe wrong about the placement of sounds, but there are certain "natural" places on the stereo where the sounds come together and play as "one".
i'll try to post the link... |

Yep, that's pretty standard in rock and pop-music (that uses regular drums), but only to simulate an actual drumset. That boat sailed for psytrance with the synthetic drum sounds, so why not create synthetic (and cool!) effects, instead of simulating realness... Unless you really want to, then thats fine

Well Amygdala...Surrender thinks the panning does not make his sounds sound "natural"...that's why my comment
