Well there are many flavors for psy pads... you can use lushy airy stuff like from spectrasonic's vsts, create your own using long tail reverbs and fx and also synthesize your own... i like absynth and albino for tasks like this, make sure u learn the matrix modulation so you can run several lfo's through those paddy long notes for trippy spatial fx

Also... use chords and effective progressions to achieve very deep sensations.

Layer 2 or more pads, eq them right, trancegate them, sidechain them or whatever... also some times some pad sounds can be used with shorter notes like eights or quarters, create interesting varying riff, profit.

pads are a bit tricky.
Because it usually covers a big chunk of the frequency spectrum i find it hard to make it fit without it muddying-up too much of the other sounds..
Its up to you to decide which textures you want to boost to shine through the mix but i usually do a lot more cutting for other more important sounds like leads to standout through the pad, because for me the pads are best used as a background filler.

Due to the fact that Pads usually muds up at least the bass, i suggest to only use it on separate sequences from the bass, and if you need a pad over the bass to make that calm feeling or whatever, use one with a low/none amount of low frequencies :/

recipe for pad = Low attack long release, arpeggiator and midinotes following the melody of the bass? just some tips i have picked up on the way as well..

pads are quite quite like Leads in the way that there are tons of variants.

but fiddeling with the attack and release, maybe even adding a delay is a tips for the final touch to make it sort of dreamy etc..            http://soundcloud.com/li-fe

I said I like it dirty, not muddy.

My favorite way to make pads is to timestretch shit and add a bunch of FX, and then stretch it more. just go crazy and add a whole bunch of nonsense then bounce it and stretch. Download paulstretch and go nuts on any source material that you want.

As for pads mudding up the bass....can't you just EQ out the low end???            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

yes, CUT all below 150hz or so, but still pads uses a lot of space and interfere with the majority of instruments.
aslo., i try to keep my timbre of the bass from going under the pad.

for me pads are essential to create a mood. i like it as an underlayer. but hey, thats just me , do what you like.

Pads is the mello story of your track must be clear , Clean , Arranged and stable . Cant talk or write about them
in an few lines in here cause this is an big , Larg and spacious world .

The mello pads i build i usualy use some vs'ts together (For each - Pad) , Its all about what that in my mind at the moment and what i want to get , Also when i work with 3 vst's at the same time for an one tune or more , I like to use few sounds from the same vst's so then when its done i get an 9 sounds in 1 (If i took 3 vst's for example lets say Korg LegacyCell and 3 from Korg M1-Le And 3 from the Albino) i get more deepness , Space , Attendance , Dominant and 'Wet' feeling in my music with an defferent sounds on the same format pattern . You can play with after the way you want in your track .

For sound work , In the vst (Man its an realy big story to write it all here) And out by eqing , Compressors and those .

P.s :

Always made your own music (And pads) 100% yours , Work hard dont be lazy , Dont shutter , Compel or work around
the net pads , Sure can be an mice leggo game but this is not yours . Its all about your musiacal development . Cheers ..

I like to export a snippet of a pad I bounced and cut it up, loop it, slice it, reverb it, sidechain it, automate parameters on loopers/panners/crushers.

Always get nice stuff out from it.

I like very thin pads/strings. Also with very wide stereo spectrum. Layering works a charm to give it a changing sound, but again, cant be too lush.

Just covers too many frequencies to be lush, so rather have it compliment other tones that are active in the track.
