Yep It's a killer web page - everything u need to know about making your own controller - i'm glad that i see more and more people turning into d.i.y. Why spend a fortune for a "market" midi contr. when you can make
your custom one the way you want and with almost no cost?            Peace, Love, Death metal

yeah it's fun to do it yourself. although i chose to make it on my own completely, i start to program an own small 'operating system' etc instead of using all the ready-to-use stuff there. also i try to do my own circuits and stuff. it will certainly take longer but i think that way i can learn much more.

do you think it's cheaper to do the controller on your own? i think it's much more expensive. if you consider prices for motor faders, lcd and then for the front panels etc. large companies can buy thousands of components and get better prices. what do you think?

If you have the time to do it all from scratch then why not...it'll take you a long time though...i wouldn't do it i'm to lazy
As for the price ...it depends on what you wanna make... a budget 16 knobs/16 faders midi controller just for tweaking stuff...i bet that it wouldn't cost more than 100 euros...get your faders and knobs from old hardware you're not using anymore
(synths /mixers/consoles) , spend some money on the circuits and a small (dunno...5 digit) lcd screen , find something for covering the whole thing up (a shoe box in the worst case ) , and you're done!
Not exactly a quality piece of equipment but does the job hehe
If you want motorized faders and good lcd screen and a nice metal cover then it'll surely cost more
but then (since it's custom made for you) you get a bigger value for money
