Honestly I'm surprised this hasn't happened more often at the bordello (from what I understand this is only the second party they've had shut down, out of dozens).
The building is in a residential neighborhood, there is always noise and people in the street, and the parties that happen there are nowhere close to legal |

There is no such thing as an after-hours permit in Oakland. All 'cabarets'--that is, venues where dancing or live music occurs--must close between 2 AM and 6 AM (unless I'm reading this rather clearly-written law badly--I am not a lawyer).
The underground scene in Oakland has always prospered because the police usually have better things to do and rarely if ever enforce this law. What happened here was simply a case of the squeaky wheel getting the grease--the Bordello has had parties pretty much every week for months now, and I would guess the complaints from neighbors had piled up until they reached critical mass. |

I arrived about 2 minutes after the cops did!  My impression of the way the cops were dealing with the venue owner was that they had just been patrolling their beat, and saw alot of people outside that wouldnt normally be in the East oakland 12th st area at midnight and thus, popped in to take a look. They shut the party down for not having a cabaret license since they caught the cash box at the door and knew people were being charged for admittance despite the venu owner consistently declaring it was a "not for profit" event.
Wish we'd heaqrd about the makeup party sooner!

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who made the second party happen! Great job getting it up and running in a flash and saving the night!!! Had lots of fun catching up with folks and dropping some new original tunes. Too bad the cops showed up a second time but at least we got to rage it for most of the night!! Boom <3 |
