outdoor parties and sound complaints

So this weekend I was at a psy party in the middle of the woods in the middle of nowhere (and I mean nowhere) New Hampshire. The nearest house must have been in a mile radius and the guy who lived there came to the party.
Circa 3am or so the cops showed up on a noise complaint from the next county over! (Eventually they left and we switched to chillout until we blasted some morning trance at 7am).
I really want to do some outdoor parties closer to Boston but this has gotten me shaken up a bit if we got a noise complaint from a county over in the middle of the woods, what to expect in a more densely populated locale. We're talking about getting a decibel reader to monitor our sound a bit. I was wondering if anyone knew what safe sound levels are and/or any good tricks to help buffer sound in an outside environment.

Anyone ever try throwing a party close to a highway or airport to wash out the sound?

Or do you guys think country folk are just a little more sensitive to noise than us urban birds?

bass carries.

we've gotten complaints from up to 10 miles away in the mountains, though usually you should be ok if there's a 2-3 mile radius of no houses and thick forest all around.

I think this was def a case of some mountain acoustics. I think the bass factor is really only relevant in apt. buildings and such when people are under you. I think it's actually the higher pitched noises that carry longer distances but I could be wrong.

Just think about what's the first thing you hear when approaching a party           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

With a big enough system, people's windows will vibrate several miles away from the bass if there's nothing to stop the sound, that's what gets you noise complaints. Trees help a lot, and so does pointing your speakers/subs into the hillside instead of out into the open. Sound carries further in the mountains, though I am not sure how high you can get in New Hampshire. Our parties are usually at 8000-9000 feet so we have to hide pretty well.

If it comes to it, get a bunch of haystacks to create a barrier and wet them down. This should absorb a lot of the sound.           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

That's pretty cool how far it carries. So what happens when you stand close to the speakers? Are the vibrations actually good for your body? I have always thought that they would be.

I'm pretty sure that nothing related to sound is good for you (physically speaking). We'll probably find out that it gives you cancer in a few years           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

I've already accepted that all these years of partying are going to leave me deaf and senile in my old age (God willing I make it that long). Hopefully medical pot will be legal by then and I'll just be in an ignorant, blissful euphoria in the nursing home.

Seriously though, for what it's worth that hour of really cranked up music before the cops told us to turn it down was totally worth it. Ondrase behind the decks spinning some real mind fuckery hard psytrance. Getting fucked by the music is really one of the best feelings you can have Play it to the max and f**k me harder!

Let's find a private island or a cave so we can really play it loud.
