hey everyone-

I thought an interesting thread would be for deco folks out there across the world to share tips and techniques for displaying deco outdoors--

Last year at our Gil party I experimented (with mixed success) with making a large bamboo framework and then hanging the drops on that structure. This year, I'm thinking of trying to use ratchet straps so I can lay all the drops out, attach them to the lines, and then crank the bad boys up. Anyone out there experimented with this?

It's always a constant struggle to keep the lines taught so the drops don't sag, especially after a good mid-doof rain, so I'm thinking this idea might help alleviate that problem.

Any other tips or tricks out there...

Don't be shy folks...

Bueller? Bueller?

OK, well how's about I ask a question to try and get the ball rolling--

I'm interested in doing a large overhead spandex display. Anyone out there have any experience with that and want to share some pointers?

Also, I'm looking for ideas on how to set up really large drops outdoors-- Like 20' x 20' ... maybe even bigger

I prefer to have drapes high on frame made structures...

for ground use... i find it all a nightmare... I do ask for ready made spaces to cover.. but most times its better to make a 2x4 window frame with A frames at 45 degress... but now i have learnt of wind and its shitting power... i dont get on with wind... so now i only like to deco inside areas... like circus tents.. or ready made stages!

lazy... but the man power and tools you have to remember!           U.V Art & Design

uhuh metal structures work the best.

or build a couple teepees and hang stuff from them, with ropes from one teepee to the other, just making sure that they are really solid on the ground. usually a heavy log does the trick.

also just use the trees if available... or if you know a good climber.

we use bamboo out here in India ... really cheap and they grow rapidly in the wild so you can rent them anywhere (there's a saying... if you goto sleep over a bamboo seed you'll wake up impaled... colorful eh)

we constructed both a frame for art as well as a space-teepee for the console... here are a few pics of the what it finally looked like... if you're interested in looking at the construction technique lemme know and ill upload some of the frame pictures. very basic stuff.

bamboo framework for art:

we could have done it without the purple backdrop if the art was big enough.

The teepee idea looks great-- I'll definitely have to try that!

Here's some pics of the bamboo framework I did for our Gil party in Asheville-- the two warrior deity drops are both about 14 feet tall, so these structures were pretty massive-- I'll see if I can't dig up some photos of them at night in blacklight, because that was when they really looked cool--

im a big fan of PVC:

one of my partners and i made this entrance to a sound camp @ 2007 regional burning man event in vermont, us. the structure is a giant loop and stands up mostly on its own with help of good old tension, trees, and wire. no shovel needed.

those poles are flexy... and only get u so far... woods and wire are a huge help. Otherwise, i would say the technique is called "dig hole with shovel" :-P
