As the album progresses, you will find that this is no sweet grassy meadow you may trollop past with impunity. Tra-la-la! Rather it is a roiling atmospheric storm that roars through the night sky on crisp, powerful basslines carving a newly shaped understanding of unknown sonic frontiers. Artist Profile
Unwashed Tomato is one of the most notorious acts of dark psychedelic trance found on the East US Coast. Based in Phaldelphia, this group of three has been persuing their art of music, both in solo projects and together, for a few years, and have quickly built up a name for themselves both as avid producers and mix technicians as well as enthusiatic, outgoing people. Consisting of solo acts 800 Deathsticks, The Andychrist, and SixtyCycles, these three psychonauts have spread their filthy rotten, infectiously unique brand of sound across the length and breadth of America with the tirelessness and indiscrimination of a bacterial outbreak. Their debut release as a group act, "Shovel Ready", represents years of collective innovation and experimentation, and in such a short time after its birthdate, has already spread to the playlists and ears of dark psychedelic trance fans the globe around.
Future Folk
"Shovel Ready" opens up with a meaty, punchy bassbeat and squishy, growling synths of both rhythmic and arhythmic varieties. Percussion convolutions and binary collusions twist the arrangement to further directions with every measure. The arpeggios are crisp and clean and spell out an ego-busting dancefloor smasher.
No Rest For The Wicked
Menacing sixteenth-note bass and colloidial digital pads curtain an elastic, undulating saw lead. Resonant frequency modulation coupled with unrelenting high hat percussion serve up healthy heapings of high-wattage hedonism. This apporpriately named track offers little respite, keeping your body wiggling even when you think there isn't a wiggle left in you.
Evil Tent
This one is a powerhouse from the outset. Towed by an undercurrent of aggressive saw bass, the layers from the kick on up flow forth with the force of a tidal wave. The drums and percussion bits are noticeably excellent and provide extra organically mechanical push to the overall beat. THe sounds of the first half wrap themselves nicely before spilling forth new rounds of sonic goodies.
What Happened
Whoops and binary grunts decrypt the rhythms just in time for the moments of abstract breakbeat. Prepare yourself for acid-etched inundations of saw-bladed sound waves which slice your neurons as neatly as a sushi knife. Superb bass alterations influence the mood and the rhythm and keep your ears and feet perked and attentive.
Green Crack
Panoramic percussion is the name of this track's game, and the effect does well to add dimension to sounds which seem to start in the middle and flow outward, like a thick liquid. The climax approaches, however, with stacatto iterations of trashy, distorted industrialism that makes dentist drills seem like lollipops.
Sudden Access
An expansive, wall-of-sound intro provides dynamic contrast to this track's minimal opening. It doesn't stay that way for long, however. Retro electo bleeps and bloops mate with low-pH squelches and squirts to propel the energy with the velocity of a slingshot. Clever arpeggios and diverging layers paint unexpected moods before combining into a single texture near the end.
The Grey is Prsdgsdgsg
This track's name is only slightly more pronounceable than the sounds within themselves, yet it matters not. This is a language for the feet, and on a more molecular level, the cerebrum. Steamrolling low-end bass nips at your dancing heels while resonance-drenched leads and high ends tittilate your grey matter. Breakdown dissonance forebears an increased amplitude of energy.
Filter On
After a tracklist as thick and heavy as this, it comes as no surprise that the Tomatoes end their album on a pulse-quickening tempo. The bassnotes ride the scale spectrum and the upper frequencies follow suit. Cartoony voices induce euphoric giggles while the lead synths go for an all out encore, while the snares and percussion engage in near-futile attempts to contain the chaos.
