true.
i didn;t explain that very well before. what the person meant who said this was that when you are mixing a track, if you A/B it to a track that you consider to be very well produced and mastered, then if you can get your own mix sounding 85% as good as this then the mastering should do the rest. |

I can't afford it but the alternative is putting out a record which doesn't sound as good as it could and that's not really an option. |

I take your point but I don't agree entirely. No mastering engineer can save a terrible mix, that is true, but a mix which is proportionally balanced within itself but which is tonally wrong can be corrected at mastering.
Many times in the past I've mixed stuff in unfamiliar or acoustically poor rooms that sounded great at the time but terrible everywhere else and that were successfully corrected by the mastering engineer.
If I've learned anything in the time I've been working with music is that you really can polish a turd. |

well- in a way we say the same thing
when i mean bad mix i mean to a really bad mixing .
unfamiliar or acoustically poor rooms is something common i think in way of the home studio these days as people need to accept what they can afford - and that means also not only in equipment but also in acoustics.
so many times good mastering solve this acoustics issues of mixing , but well, bad mixing of track can be fixed in way but it will not help if the master guy will "cut" (or the opposite)and polish some freq. . most of time if the mix is to much unbalance all the track will be effected in the mastering .

I agree and in a perfect world I would pay the same but releasing music should be fun and not about loosing a lot of money. Which you 100% will if paying this high fees on mastering (+ all other costs producing CD's). I can live with a less experienced" mastering and save the hard earned cash i make from my full-time day job

I hear what you're saying and I justify the cost partly because this is my day job. An artist [painter] friend of mine thinks nothing of spending £1000 on oil paints and canvasses because it's how he makes his living and he needs the materials to do his job.

Cool. Thanks for some insights. It's not intuitively apparent how important good mastering is not having heard too much 'unmastered' music.
I guess mastering is also a huge thing for pop music. But every so often, the producer goes: NO. It will have loudness. And it will sound great to the masses.
For instance, I love the red hot chili peppers. But damn, Californication and Stadium Arcadium sound terrible. The lowest acoustic pluck is as loud as the snaredrum.
