I'm just up the road from Bovey, near Chagford. We talk the dog for a walk along the river in Bovey some Sundays.
And I agree, we had the choice to live pretty much anywhere in Europe after Spain and we chose Devon. Not just Devon, this bit of Devon. I'm from Surrey originally but this bit of Devon really feels like home. |

yep, the whole of east dartmoor (running through haldon and down to exeter) is tops. mid devon is like a strange vacuum that never ends and north devon is just a nice day out. east devon is the coldplay of devon (ok but doesn;t grab me).
you probably know this but there's a high grade mastering studio in chagford (fripp uses it).
p.s. serious heads up....watch out for lymes disease from ticks on the moor in the summer. i got it whilst doing forestry work on haldon (i'm ok now) and the doctor in bovey said that quite a lot of people come down from the moor with it. |

Yeah, Simon Heyworth @Super Audio Mastering. He's very highly regarded and he does make stuff sound magical - and half a mile from my door.
But he's not Kevin Metcalfe [ http://www.soundmasters.co.uk/ ]and it's a testament to how highly I regard Kev that I'm willing to drive for ten hours to get access to his ears and his instincts.
I recently made a list of twenty albums I thought sounded incredibly well mastered and then looked them up on Discogs to see who mastered them. Wouldn't you know it? Kevin did sixteen of them. |

that's a trick! i'm not sure i'd be able to tell how well mastered something was without knowing how good the original production was first. |

The art of the mastering engineer is vastly underrated and little understood.
I've heard enough bad cuts to know a good one instantly. |

Ott, don't you think that mastering is also a matter of taste to some extent?

To some extent, obviously, but within the parameters of the medium. 180 degree inverted sine wave sub bass won't cut to vinyl etc.

Is it fair to say it's kind of like a leap of faith to finish an album and send it off to mastering - obviously sending out something that doesn't sound good enough until it's mastered? Is an album considered 'done' at all before mastering?
The only album I have complaints with when it comes to mastering is the muses rapt - spiritual healing. Now that's some great music covered in screech and crackle.

I would never 'send something off for mastering'.
I've lost count of the number of times I've mixed a record for somebody only to receive a copy a couple of months later and discover it's been ruined by a terrible cut: nasty inappropriate compression or clumsy EQ or, more recently, squared off with an Ultramaximizer or [even worse] a TC Finalizer.
I always offer to attend the cut but attended mastering sessions are more expensive and too many people decide [inexplicably] to skimp on the mastering process, either by trusting a possibly disinterested and underpaid engineer to treat their lovingly created mixes as carefully as they would or by giving it to their mate with some plugins and a set of cheap speakers.
I work as hard as I can, for hours and hours, to make sure my mixes are as good as they can get before they leave my studio - there's no way I'm letting them out of my sight at the last crucial stage. I'm always astonished at how much Kevin can improve them in just 20 minutes. He hardly touches them - half a dB here, half a dB there - but you hit the bypass button and instantly you can hear where your £150-an-hour has gone.
Mastering my albums is my favourite part of the whole process because, having been an engineer for twenty years, it's the bit where I finally get to slouch on the sofa drinking tea and being asked what I think - and it's always a pleasure watching somebody who has forgotten more than I'll ever know about sound effortlessly tweaking away and making me sound better than I am.

one interesting quote i heard once was that the sound of your track should be about 85% as good as possible. mastering should run it in the rest of the way.
that sounds about right to me. |

Sadly most artist today can not afford to pay £ 150 an hour to get their music properly mastered. Blame it on the Boggie!
