I think that it's a very relevant point.
There is certainly less new sounds appearing nowadays, regardless of genre.
And the same hold true for genres that is not especially dependant on technology.
Sure there might be some rockbands that can be called original, but you just don't get the kind of new trends that used to appear frequently before.
Can anybody name a distinct style of rock that has appeared after for example death metal and grunge?
Nu metal? LOL
I think it's a coincidence that just when the technology made producing electronic music easy to do for anyone, invention ground to a halt.
It just seems to be really hard to find original styles nowadays regardless of if you are a band using pretty much the same equipment as they used half a century ago or if you are using computers and plugins.

Was thinking about that as well but figured it's hardly worth mentioning because it's not very new either.
But musically and as a fashion it's hardly ground breaking.
When I was young you had lot's of different subcultures appearing that all had their distinct style and really was new and different like for example hip-hop, metal, goths and synths (seems like those where a quite localized Swedish phenomenon).
Nowadays I don't know of any new styles apart from emo's, and they just look like a mix between rockers and goths. Actually most kids who want to be a bit different just seem to go for a punk style.

Obviously I'm not to initiated into different forms or rock or metal.
But for you that seems to know a bit about that kind of music, how many of the genres you mentioned are really different compared to other forms of metal that is more than a decade old?
I have no idea or how any of those sounds and only recognize the name on a couple of them and I do have a sneaking suspicion that even if I heard some of those styles I would have very difficult telling the difference from for example death metal.
Psytrance, house, techno and DnB are certainly distinct styles of electronic dance music, but that's not the case with "melodic darkpsy" or "dark prog" IMHO.
Coming up with new names for small variations on older styles is not really what I'm talking about, hence I used the word "distinct" when asking for new styles of rock.

@spindrift: Most people can't tell the difference between sub-genres unless they listen to the music a lot. However, I think that the people that can tell the difference only do so because they are told that they are different sub-genres. Because I don't listen to much, a lot of what people classify as melodic or morning psytrance sound very similar to me. Maybe there are more differences there that I don't hear yet or maybe it's just because they were told one is melodic and one is morning. I don't think the "classification" of the music should be why it sounds different, it should sound different first, then be classified accordingly.

Music has limits believe it or not, eventually anything that can be heard, will have been heard. The only non-common variable in music is time. If the tracks got a minute longer every year..then the potential for diffrent tracks stays the same...but the sounds. no.
As for trance..to me..Goa trance and Psy trance are polar opposites. Psy trnace is that synthy popy stuff with tons of minimal sounding beats and voice clips...Goa trance is driving arps and most likely ethnic percussion selection, with a more organic feel to it. something a tribe in africa or asia would dance to...but with syntheticly organic sounds.
Or, one could say Psy is for druggies and goa is for spirtual goers. Lol. |

Sixofour: I have never made a distinction between Goa and psytrance. For me it has always been psytrance. (Just because it is faster to say than "Psychedelic Trance"). Goa/Psy was hardly ever made in Goa so I always found it a silly name. (It was just called that by some UK mags that absolutely need titles and genres to distinguish things easily in writing... It stuck).
As for music having limits? I don't know. It always seems that way until someone comes up with something new.

before moog there was a very limited landscape of instruments to use. so therefore the classical masters learnt to use the boring instruments in very innovative ways. I think that lack of further sonic capabilities will not limit the musical arts. we may see really nicely made electronic music someday, not just boring crap like these days. but I doubt that tech limits will kill musical evolution.

When you mean compared to bands like metallica, Iron Maiden, Napalm death, entombed?
Personally id rather describe a band with other bands almost like describing how you cook a dish, its alot easier and more informative rather than putting a genre/subgenre on it. If you want me to i can send you some of this new music if your interested so you can get your own picture =)
