Aye... that's true. But i think there's two things at work here:
1) music is getting more dogmatic
2) you have heard more music so it's harder to surprise you.

Even with parties you can see who's playing and if it's the kind of music you like (if you're lucky enough that there are enough parties in your area). You can go to a party or not. I still have hope that there will be parties with mind-blowing music as long as there are people who like their minds to be blown by music. It's getting harder to find them, but it's also part of me having heard more.

yes man and i know if the music isnt unexpectedly creative its much harder to blow those minds and make them want to get blown again and again. IF you are searching for a mind explosion (hehe cheesy) and you get a nice night sitting on a blanket by a fire. itll be a good time but that will eventually not be enough to motivate you to keep coming back. SO in order for this to flourish we need to be exploring new ways to blow minds (damn i hate saying that, but how else do you describe someone being overwhelmed by the thought that they simply cannot believe what they are hearing.)

DAM Right
totally agree, with both of ya hehe
when u hear it, and its hot ya feel it thru ya spine... also genre's follow certain trends thats what makes em, all downsouth beats sound downsouth, west coast rap sounds like west coast rap, thats urban but its related in the same way in electronica...

Me personally now days i feel like im getting a bit more settled down unless im driving like an asshole down the highway going 90+
listening to psytrance, am i the only one who gets in the stage mind of speed racer when driving and listening to psytrance???

Man thats the best music to speed like an BASTARD, but seriously im gettin more into a layed back style, im starting to change directions to a more chill psy groove kinda like sphongle, bluetech, for example also stuff like enigma... im heading down that direction a more layed back crowd, dunno if im gettin older and im gettin less hectik u but this is more of an sound thats refreshing the combination of ethnic instruments and electronica is just about as good as SEX, plus its more melodic
and honestly more complicated, I don't want to be mister super duper clean production man, I come from a lo-fi rap game, I like my sound to be between the clean crystal clear psytrance and the grimmy, grainy lo-fi rap,
i feel it makes for better music plus people oughta concentrate more on their playing than
just the sound production like BASS n KICK like at the forum, dont get me wrong it is an great resource of info really dam good but come people its not just bass and kick that shit be boring plus if u havent notice i feal the hi hats and snare are what really moves the track, the bass n kick are the backbone, welll sorry if i got out of topic hehe ruff day and im smoking one. anyways i recoomend alot of the guys on here to reach out to other genres and explore you'll be surprise on improvement and originality.

I listen to psy mainly but not all the time cus that shit will bog after a while, so take breaks and listen to other stuff, some stuff that i like are TOOL dam right also Dream Theather, Alice in chains, Fear Factory, Willy chirino (cuban singer) also Celia Cruz that lady was incredible i recommend her stuff be open minded, I like also New Age
Theres plenty of quality in the genre and amazing productions A+ too bad people ignore it now days, you'll learn lots from new age at least i have, it's a secret favorite music of mines hehe but keep it on the hush

Soo.. I am pretty sure this was written for art majors or something but alot of them apply to writing music, in my opinion.

Also I don't agree with all of them, so don't bother telling me.

HOW TO BE CREATIVE
1. Ignore everybody.
2. The idea doesn't have to be big. It just has to be yours.

3. Put the hours in.

4. If your biz plan depends on you suddenly being "discovered" by some big shot, your plan will probably fail.

5. You are responsible for your own experience.

6. Everyone is born creative; everyone is given a box of crayons in kindergarten.

7. Keep your day job.

8. Companies that squelch creativity can no longer compete with companies that champion creativity.

9. Everybody has their own private Mount Everest they were put on this earth to climb.

10. The more talented somebody is, the less they need the props.

11. Don't try to stand out from the crowd; avoid crowds altogether.

12. If you accept the pain, it cannot hurt you.

13. Never compare your inside with somebody else's outside.

14. Dying young is overrated.

15. The most important thing a creative person can learn professionally is where to draw the red line that separates what you are willing to do, and what you are not.

16. The world is changing.

17. Merit can be bought. Passion can't.

18. Avoid the Watercooler Gang.

19. Sing in your own voice.

20. The choice of media is irrelevant.

21. Selling out is harder than it looks.

22. Nobody cares. Do it for yourself.

23. Worrying about "Commercial vs. Artistic" is a complete waste of time.

24. Dont worry about finding inspiration. It comes eventually.

25. You have to find your own schtick.

26. Write from the heart.

27. The best way to get approval is not to need it.

28. Power is never given. Power is taken.

29. Whatever choice you make, The Devil gets his due eventually.

30. The hardest part of being creative is getting used to it.

31. Remain frugal.

32. Allow your work to age with you.

33. Being Poor Sucks.

34. Beware of turning hobbies into jobs.

35. Savor obscurity while it lasts.

ya agree with not agree-ing with all of these it sounds like alot of stuff bosses have said to me hehe or maybe i read one or two from some cheaply framed inspirational poster in the office hallway like sing in your own voice hehe. and its got a cute little photo of a donkey with its mouth wide open. but ya some interesting points. For instance the one about being discovered. I have run across alot of frustrated artists who are upset about the fact that they arent getting released this is where this rule comes in. If your goal is to get released then you will do what has been done and expect someone to discover you and be upset when you arent rewarded. while everyone likes to recieve credit where its due that shouldnt be whats driving you. In my early years over and over i was let down by building this up in my mind and following very ego driven paths in search for my pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Everytime I didnt find it i would get upset and not understrand why nobody could see that i was as genious that i thought I was. haha. thats all part of the growth though being able to realize where you are doing wrong and thinking ill thoughts and rather than being humiliated by them using them as tools to help you move forward. Making music has just as much to do with what is going on inside of you as it does anything technical. When this was my attitude my music was immature and weak. Now, alot of it has to do with an inner struggle im going through. either way the progression technically can be heard but even more apparent when listening to my old compared to new is the progression emotionally inside of me. Im sure this is common with most artists. So continue to make music but more importantly try to search deeper within yourself and expose the parts of you that need work. Focus on self evolution and your music as well as your entire world will benefit. Nothing can compare to being able to feel the emotion in a track be it chaos beauty humor anger love uncertainty and so on you cannot convey these things if you are not deeply in touch with them. When you get this right youll send chills through your listener and no amount of freak out weirdness can top that. Have you ever listened to something and just felt overwhelmed with emotion even though its not the style you usually like have you ever been listening to a track with good production in a style that you like and just couldnt get into it well both of those things are due to an invisible communication of emotion.

ya you are right i am troubled and i am a frustrated artist thats what drives me thats what has been coming out in my music lately. Its my own personal audio therapy. I love a beautiful melody dancing gingerly through the sound field but at this time in my life what comes out is confusion intensity and often times a mess with sparse peace and beauty which is a perfect image of what i am going through internally and in my life right now. I assure you this is not a post trip rant, but with emotionless digital communication my tone and gestures are lost. imagine reading all of this and assume that i have an inspired tone more than i am complaining because really thats where im coming from. The music gives me sleepless nights because i work all day and feel compelled to at the very least own the right to choose what to do with some of my time. Im sorry if im coming off as upset or bitchy its really not that way. i just wanted to post something where people could help inspire others to step outside of their mold a bit. perhaps that has been lost through the posts. if so my apologies. thisll be my last post ill let this one run the rest of its course. I dont want this to become about me in the least. If thats the case the point has been missed entirely thats why i havent posted any examples of my own music im working on lately and havent spoken much of it till now. The words are there for inspiration not to brag about myself being different or that im the trance messiah hehe, or in any way superior thats simply not true. Just take the previous posts in a positive light they are meant to be an inspiration not a bitch session.

best regards

creation is fun, but creation can only come from the mind of a child, that is pure, uncluttered, without preconceptions, and more importantly goals...

but with these kind of threads, it is easy to end up 'preaching to the choir' as I think anyone with good mind and conscience will agree with 90% of what is written here

lots of good points, and with any good art, the cream will float to the top (sometimes turds, too, but..) we all just gotta keep making good music and good parties that have a good mix of genres and influences so it is fun for everyone.

getting caught up to much in subgenres can lead to a dead end...

hi Facehead! I just wanted to comment on this, i think what you are referring to is desensitization phenomenon... like how it is ok to show some nudity or suggestiveness on TV now, and even swear words where years ago it was not acceptable. be careful of this, as the blowing of the mind part leads exactly to the thing you are talking about, and eventually people become desensitized to this phenomenon. Like the first time you heard The Lone Deranger it blew your mind, but even after the 70th listen its still good music isnt it? still groovy and psychedelic, isnt it? when someone is in complete awe of something it is a highly personal experience, and can be the culmination of many factors in that persons life, where the music that they heard at that time was a catalyst to feel that. it can't and shouldnt happen everytime

a tattoo artist friend of mine said once that they do not ink that tattoo into skin, rather they bring it to the surface. such is the same with all art, i think, whether, painter, sculpture or music, its kind of the same concept, for music maybe to make that moment shine in time

I would want to say don't focus on trying to blow people's minds, but focus on making good, groovy music.

to me, great music breathes, and takes on an energy and life of its own when playing. you can feel it! its like conjuring up a force. focus on this aspect, and the rest will follow           Gamma Riders EP out now on iTunes and Amazon.com!
