I'm pretty sure something's gonna happen...

In the future: I plan on living in Oregon for a while... Either Portland, Eugene, or Bend.
If it happens I definitely plan on working with organizers and party-goers to develop the scene further
Party Time! Excellent!

I'm actually looking to relocate in about two years. I gotta meet the following criteria...
1. Must have vibrant music scene(all genres) where people actually dance, not just stand there and comment on the music.
2. Must be easy to get IT jobs.
3. Must be affordable.
Portland looks pretty neat, can someone tell me the downsides? |

hardkornate,
I lived in PDX for three years, and since you asked, here are the downsides:
1.) cold and rainy.. like a wet blanket.. for several months out of the year. Prozac weather. Can you live happily like that? Some people can, some people can't cope.
2.) kind of old, shabby, industrial atmosphere. And kind of far from nice nature, IMHO. An hour to Mt. Hood, 45 minutes to the Gorge, a long drive to the ocean.
Tons of transplants, hipsters and gentrification. Renting is still pretty cheap compared to other major cities.
But overall really friendly, nice people and tons of culture. Lots of live music of all genres, famous for indie rock.. all kinds of electronica is represented. good DJs and producers.
You shouldn't have trouble finding IT work if you are skilled, but it can be extremely competitive & economically sparse for liberal arts majors, healers and unskilled workers - which there are many of. |

hehe the hipsters are what i was referring to i guess i shoulda put quotes there... it seems like there are alot of really interesting folks but the culture seems to water itself down with the assembly line of generic cookie cutter personalities of the counter culture. but i may be being judgmental its hard to tell the difference between observations and un founded judgments

@ brett -
to counter your points, which i can understand...
1- ive lived here for six months, moving here in november meant that we endured the grey, wet season as our introduction to portland... which at times was challenging but.... there are nice bursts of beautiful weather here and there,,, it doesnt get much below freezing, the city only had 1 inch of snow all winter and now that all the trees are in bloom and we have had some days as warm as 80 already!
i found the winter much more tolerable than say, the NorthEast, and while it does rain a lot, i find that the persistent cloudcover and overall dampness is more of a problem. the summers in oregon are non-stop gorgeous!
2 - the industrial area i s pretty much sectioned off in certain parts of town. there are so many cool neighborhoods and streets where lots of cool shops, cafes and people live. Forest Park is a 5000 acre park that takes up a large part of the northwest part of town. there are lots of other smaller parks all over the whole city, lots of trees and quiet neighborhoods too. the ocean is only 90 mins away, and lots of hikes can be had in less than an hour drive.
i would say more but im out of time.

Bluespectral,
I compare the nature to other places I've lived recently, like Ashland (stunning panorama of psychedelic scenery, 5 minute *walk* to incredible hiking / mountain bike trails).. and Boulder where I am now (incredible views, 10 minute *bike ride* till I'm in a jaw-dropping canyon or trails) - and both places are bright and sunny 300+ days of the years. The nature and sunshine makes ALL the difference in my quality of life.. even though I knew HUNDREDS of cool people in p-town and got invited to interesting events every weekend.
Facehead,
Yeah, hipsters everywhere in p-town. If you're into tats, PBR, cigs, coffee, thrift shops and indie rock it is mecca. But plenty of other types of people too. |

Ok, then this begs the question, hows the boulder scene and job market? |
