I have a Creamware Pulsar 2 card running Scope 4.0. What I want to find out is what the quality is like of the add on plugins such as Optimaster, and the Vinco analog modelled compressor. Does anyone own these and how do the Creamware plugins compare to new cards such as the TC Powercore or the UAD-1 card?
Anyone who has this card and who can shed some light on the topic would be helpful. |

I haven't got those plugs, but I heared good things about them.
I'm not so keen on mastering using the pulsar since the waves plugs sound really good and I find the process of rendering in SF more convenient than recording thru scope.
I do have the timeworks plugs, and their EQ, compressor and reverb sound better than anything host based i tried for sure.
If you are mostly after good basic processing like EQ, compression and reverb the UAD-1 seems to have the best stuff though.
I don't really know what is avalable for the TC now. When I checked it out a few years ago it was not that exiting plugs for it. Their M5000 and fireworx is nice indeed, but the finalizer and their basic stuff like compressors and EQ's never really did it for me.
In essence I would say:
The Pulsar rules for synthesis without doubt, but there is some very good processing plugs to get for it if you spend some cash.
Also you get plenty of I/O, which both UAD-1 and TC is missing.
The UAD-1 for great basic mixing plugs.
The TC for a bit of both maybe, but IMHO it's mainly popular because everyone are familiar with them as a brand, and the Virus is often mentioned as a great attraction. I just cannot get exited about it since it's the most overused synth there is nowadays and it's no competition whatsoever in my view compared to the Pulsar modular with the Flexor modules.

Gday Spindrift
Thanks for the very informative post on your opinions on the Creamware vs UAD/TC cards. I have to say I've only had the Pulsar 2 card for about a month and the quality of the plugins such as phaser, chorus and reverb are pretty damn nice.
I will have to check out some reviews of the Timeworks plugins and I am already familiar with Waves but they are just too damn processor hungry.
Any one else have a Pulsar 2 card?

I use both Powercore and UAD-1, and i wouldn't want to miss both. I use the uad for standard mixing (channel strips, compression, eqs) and the powercore for the Virus plugin and the reverbs. If i would have to choose i would go for the powercore though, since the reverbs save a lot of cpu power. If i'm not mistaken, the uad-1 and powercore plugins are equal or better then the scope ones, but the 3rd party modular synths for scope are VERY good. |
