People actually use some of those op art pictures for scientific research: there's this wierd thing whereby geneticists and molecular bio-chemists can look at pictures of proteins thru a type of stereogram (stereo actually meaning 3D) picture as a 2D representation on a page. In the stereogram, there are usually 2 line drawings and the reader has to cross their eyes (or relax them) until the 3D structure is seen - the protein
