..So im about to take the plunge.. go mobile and get a laptop..... but just as with all things... everyone i talk to has a diferent opinion about which laptop is good for music!
Some say it should always be a Sony Vaio.. and others say that when things go wrong... the Vaio is really expensive to get repaired!
Then there is the question of the chip! one friend keeps ranting for me to stick with a P4.... but another friend reckons that the new Centrino is the way to go...
and what about these new Toshiba Centrino laptops?? how do they rate against the Sony Centrino models?
I'll be getting the Laptop from Japan.. so hopefully it should be 'Shit Hot'.... but,
dam its hard to make a decision on which 'Manufacturer' to go for...and... which Chip??
all opinions welcomed

My advice would be to stay away from Sony Vaios if you want something solid. I can't speak for the rest of the world, but in the US Sony has a reputation as being top of the line, so I was rather surprised a few years ago when I first moved to Japan that their reputation here is that they make cool new high-tech things that tend to break. Its been my experience having friends who have bought Sony Vaios that that reputation is deserved too. Lots of bell and whistles, but they do tend to break. if you do go Sony I would advise you to stay away from the crazy ones with a million built in webcams and what not. Go simple. Keep in mind though that in Japan, Sony's stuff, especially the Vaio's are ALOT more expensive than the majority of other laptops. (we are talking the same prices or higher than most of the Mac laptops)
Alot of the people I know in the psy-scene here who are active artists, VJs or label owners seem to swear by Toshiba's Dynabooks and I got mine based on their experiences. My Dynabook G5 is now over two years old and still works like new and I've had no problems at all. That said, any over the big players should be fine computer-wise (I had a Fujitsu that still worked perfectly when I got rid of it after 3 years as well so....).

I suggest p4 as well. But be careful when you buy your laptop what kind of p4 it is. Manufacturers tend to put desktop processors into laptops. These tend to overheat easilly, and not only the performance drops after a while because it gets overheated, but they tend to become defective because of overheating. Get a Pentium 4 Mobile (M) processor. And get 60 or 80 GB of hard disk. You will need it. All the new sample libraries are 2-4 GB each. And it would be good if it had a firewire and pcmcia port. For example you may want to buy powercore firewire and rme pcmcia. |

cheers all....yup, will def. go for the Centrino... as ya say its designed for the laptop and dont run as hot as a standard p4...
prices have come down a lot here in London, so i reckon ill get one from here now and not Japan.. (save on OS and driver hassles as well)..
but if i go for a mac, then i gotta replace ALL my software... which is a real nightmare.. so ill stick to pc format me thinks...
still dont know about the Vaio though... ive been hearing more 'bad' than 'good' things about it and for the same price i can get a laptop custom built with slighty higher specks than an 'off the shelf Vaio'....... whatever happens... i know what ever i pay today, in 6 months something better will be available.. at a cheaper price (sucks).. but such is the world of technology eh?
cheers again for all feedback

if your still looking go for mac for music production... Sony is good fun, innovative but they tend to be the pioneeers, you are much better to go for other brands (IBM rocks!)... if you want great computers dirt cheap I'd suggest a trip to Malaysia, Kuala Lumper... I bought my P4 last December, had a about 1 gig ram chucked into along wiht very nice soundcards and a speaker set, and it was the sae as buying the same laptop here in australi by itself minus the upgrades (512 ram and crap sound/speakers)... no problem and dirt cheap |

I´d lease a G 4 then upgrade it when the G 5 comes around. that´s propably realy the best otion since you can travel around and if it get´s stolen it´s not yours anyway and you´ll get a new one:)
With the mac you can forget any questions you might have cause most of the problems with the pc will dissapear... |

go for toshiba, make sure u got the two year worldwide warranty (u need that), sony is shit expensive and not worth the extra cash
also buy preferably centrino (the mhz's are lower but they outperform any p4) or if u have the cash buy an amd 64 laptop with nvidia controller chipset
but the most important thing is the world wide waranty and a service point near your place or at least in the same country , because transport costs is always charged on u
NB: i work in a tech dept. of a shop that sells toshiba, acer, sony, packard bell, HP,... laptops and my experience is that toshiba's are the toughest with the best warranty conditions |
