In last 2-3 weeks I had opportunity to work on ESI near 08. And they sound really nice. As for 05 if they are at same qulity it should be ok but their frequncy response is from 60 Hz to 20KHz . IMO 60Hz for making psy is to high. You can maybe also look Yamaha HS5Om I think they are bether option then esi05 + they have some room control and esi dont have it.

I had the Near05Experience before getting my yamahas but imo the where actually quite good for the price paid. Not the biggest bass response but still able to get something good from them. Yeah they are sold used quite cheap so yeah get a pair if you can. Alesis One MK2 i think it is, are in the same pricerange to used. They should´, for what i have read be quite good also. Havent heard em though.
But yeah get the Near05, great budget speaker. If i was to get smaller ones ill get em. Just my 2cents
Milosh: Ofcause you can make psy on em. Use something else for cross-reference for example

I didnt say thet you cant make psy on them but it can lack of basse thats for shure.

Best way to test it is to take some tune that you know realy good and like. then listen on Hi-fi then on monitors. Also i recomand to take some classic music like Carl Orffs Carmina Burana and listen to it.
