What exactly does "gated" mean? Also, what is tube amplification? (i.e. what does it do?)

gated means that is stops abrubtly when it reaches certain level. it was largely used by phil collins
basically, you put a reverb, then a gate. when you trigger a sample, the reverb starts too. the level of reverb starts to fall, and when it reaches level that you set, it stops.
tube amplification adds additional harmonics, basically it is a distortion, but a musical one if you do not take it too far.
