Any suggestions on how I can make a nice, clean, sharp o.h!(The one frequency type)
I have a good, strong bassline,a powerful groovy groove, very good psychedelic lines etc...but somehow all I'm missing to be complete is that bloody open high.
I usually use THE Q8 E8 - VOXENGO ESS.EQ & THE BLUE REVERB.
Any other suggestions on which EQS are o be used on the oh?
BTW...
There aren't may artists who in my opinion have good open high hats so probably that is why I am not satisfied yet!
The oh I'm referring to is the ALTOM,STAR.X,SILCON SOUND,SERIOUS ISNESS,FREQUECY SURFER,AES DANA TYPE.

first of all you need good hats that sounds high

and about thier process cut the low freq and abit from the high (16kHz) and add some reverb

use your ear's!

and if you want a good hats use 909 , 808

909 open hat is the most used hat in trance.
sometime you dont even need EQ or verb.

open hats are great... you can use anything (practically). I've used time stretched S sounds with envelope which i thought sounded pretty good... just remember to highpass it nicely. The clean sound can be made pretty easily with some EQ and compression from a (as billy ambulance said) 909 oh.
@ Pavel - or put two flangers on it and get a Prometheus style oh           www.myspace.com/beat_nik

colin once gave here a tip on eq hi-hats then pushing them through a tube search for it, it was to achieve those prometheus sounding hats.           "On the other hand, you have different fingers."

I've also been struggling with my hihats.

I've read often that a gated reverb is crucial, but when I use Rverb all I can get is a highhat that sounds like it has reverb on it, not the great "PSSHT! PSSHT!" sound that I'm looking for.

Can anyone weigh in on how to properly use the gated reverb? am I trying to adjust the predelay to cause a subtle delay effect? Should the size of the room be big or tiny? How about the decay time? Fast?

Hihats are frustrating as hell, I've been working on them for what feels like forever.

Yes and no - I'm never sure if what I have is a good sample that needs the proper processing, or if it's bad from the start.

All I hear are the kickass hihats in proper trance, and the feeble, wheezing, abominations in my mixes.

It could be the sample, or the processing, or poor mixing (ie too many other competing frequencies), but my hats never seem to sit where I want them.

I tend to view a track as the kick forming the spine, the bass the bottom, and the hihat the top. The kick pulses from high to low frequencies, and the bass layers on the heavy low-end. It's the hihat that tops it off, setting the upper threshold for the high frequencies.

But I can never seem to get them high enough, even though I high-pass and EQ them.

Then again, if I made hihats I was happy with, I'd stop trying to make them better. And they *are* getting better... I'm just bitching.

good sharp clean ohh ????

thats what you guys want ?

welll , some rules to follow ...

1 . find the best fuckin OHH sample u can come across ...

2. cut below 250 hz , boost by 3-4 db , anywhere between 1500- 3000 hz [ sweep and see ] and then again high shelving filter 2 db boost frm 5500 hz ..... freqs are approx and vary according to the track and situation ......

3. nice tube amplification on it ...... for starters use the cubase Datube plugin ...

4. nice reverb , gated one if you like ...... how to do gated reverbs ? read point 5 .... reverb settings .... predelay between 2-10 ms , reverb time 0.8-1.2 s , small med room , high diffusion and adjust reverb colour to taste ....

once agan the reverb settings are approx , but experient and feel free to change ....

5. gated reverbs ..... for cubase / nuendo users .....

a. on the reverb return channel , after reverb insert that is number 1 , in insert slot 2 .... use the waves gate plugin .... and adjust flooor and gate parametrs , until it cuts the reverb tail , exactly the way you want it ...

b. setup a stereo grp channel , insert reverb and send large amt of OHH channel to this group as a send .........create another fx return channel and insert the same waves gate plugin as insert 1 .... now send the entire group channel as a pre fader send to this gate return channel and once again tweak the gate plugn ,until it nicely cuts of the reverb tail .....

hope i covered all , please feel free to ask

respect ... chandan !

What exactly does "gated" mean? Also, what is tube amplification? (i.e. what does it do?)

i never put too much thoughts on the open-hat subject. usually i leave them as they are. maybe a little bit of EQ to fit to the color of the track.
i but below 600-1000hz and boost around 8-10 khz.
