Open Hats timing to get that groove...

Heya,

Can someone enlighten me as to how the timing of (mostly) open hats affects the groove of a track? Maybe like delaying every 2nd hat by a couple of ticks or something.

Ive often heard a track and its kind of "swinging" back and forwards and it sounds oh so GROOOOVY...

Maybe someone can help me achieve this sound?

Yeah yeah,

That is pretty obvious, but how does the timing of the hats affect the groove? Maybe like speeding-up/slowing-down the hats on every downbeat etc. etc.

Maybe I must just play around and see for myself.

What I do is keep the basic closed and open hihat structure - closed every 1/16 with a few 1/8 and 1/32, open between the kicks.
Every 2 bars or 4 or whatever, I take the last open hihat of that section and pull it 1/16 backwards. Then I put a different hat (a ride, or a dirtier open) in the original place of the moved hat.

I did not understand you clearly, anyway if you chaging the speed/timing you should stiil keep the beat- do what you like and play with it.

Hmmm... i think with "groove" your realy mean what "groove" is meant to be in a sequencer.

a groove is the delay of every odd-numbered 1/16 note of a secuence.

If you have:
1-2-3-4- 1-2-3-4- 1-2-3-4 -1-2-...

You change it to:
1--2-3--4-1--2-3--4-1--2-3--4-1--...

We talk about just little bit delay (piece of a second) , so that it doesnt sounds untight but you gonna "feel" the groove.
Its a kind of controlled humanize algorythm. Cubase is able to do it automized for you, but its better to make it manuel. It is very good for Hihats, Drumlines etc.
Analogic to this: Editing drums too early can also have some nice effect to the "speed" of a line.

Indeed, in Cubase SX you can use the 'midi quantize setup' window from the midi-menu to groove-quantize selected notes. Just select the notes you wish to quantize, select the 'auto' button in the 'midi quantize setup' window and drag the slider until you have enough groove, then apply the quantization if you're happy with the result. You can also apply a 'progressive quantize' to draw existing notes nearer to a 'user groove'-grid, which is a groove you can extract from an existing groovey rex-ed loop. Hm... that sounds like mumbo jumbo when i read it back, so if you have a question, just ask

you mean how all the hihats and snares (and others...) effects the groove? like changing the way you move or dance?

coz if this the question you should try to large the distance of the structured pattern.
and of course the bassline is very crusical here so try feet those two together.

you should experiment with that stuff cause sometimes a very illogical setting can groove very nicely.,

you cant teach groove........you have to feel it.....let your kick and bass play in super slow speed....(120 bpm for instance) and try making up a drum sequence you would like to hear.....then try translating it to the computer ....

'Groove' is something very difficult to teach with words as it's something we feel rather than think about.

The best advice I have seen given thusfar has been experimentation, trying different combinations and checking out how they sound. For myself, I bought a hand drum to try and facilitate learning about grooves and how the individual notes come together to create a nice funky feel.

Writing drums at a slower tempo is another good trick as you have more time to feel the groove. Just keep in mind that when you do this you have to keep the grooves simple as a lush rhythm @ 90 bpm will be chaotic @ 140 bpm.
