And on top of all that, I am in Goa, where the power is not stable at all and I have lost the patch I was making on my Virus C that I took with, more than once, even with a power stabilizer in our house.
Running software on a laptop, does not suffer from this.

Yea, back in the days there was people who was thinking that only hardware can manage, but now we have people who think that only software could manage.
To me its fun to combine things which sounds good. Sometimes they come from hard and sometimes not, depending the case.
Again, most people who say they use only software, use also samples rendered from hardware, so they still have one sort of analog sound in their software music.
All those valuable vst plugings are always after that magical analog sound, at least so are their marketing.

This is not true.Personaly I don't like the virtual emulations at all (except of phoscyon) . There are enough of absolutely unique softsynths. To me this is exatly the point why softsynth's are so interesting, because they are able to manage things that Hardware analog are not like Nectarios also said. And there are enough of them working without samples as waveforms too.
I for instance was never excited in Diva, even not in the demos, and I am pretty sure is one of the most powerful synth in terms of emulation. Check for instance Octopus.. there is an audio input too, so you could load a waveform but the whole concept is fantastic although not easy to dig at the beginning. And reaktor should be a world of magic and unlimited possibilities , and many many more synth's that sound dope and not try to sound as something that already existed before. https://soundcloud.com/shivagarden |

sorry but hardware doesn't mean analog.
i would invest money in a real analog that can't be emulated for real. i wouldn't invest in virus or nordlead. it is virtual analog.

Yes, i remember a time when people really used the hardware factor as an excuse to tell the diference between pro´s sound and other people...
today, if people had to use the same software versions and plugins from 2002/3.... it would definitly make no big diference because its more about earing perception and knoledge ratter than material used, DAW or instruments...
i known people who still use the last logic version for windows today, and its from 2002 if i am not mistaken, and their sound quality is as good as anything i have eard around...
some of my most used plugins are Synth1, Pro-53, Z3ta+... which are also 10 years old
there was already nice sounding stuff back then, the major diference is that computers become much more powerfull, making it easier to process audio.

I didn't said that hadware means analog, but hardware (analog or not) is still hardware after rendering it to wave format.. or is it then made by software?
I have quite unique collection of software from last 10 years. It's pretty hard to get the same collection right now, so i'v been growing using software too, but still i can recognise the differences of hardware and software.
Like i said its fun to combine things which sound good, from any source.
Of course what sounds good to me not necessarily sound good to all yoo people

Hi isratrance,
Software has changed much lately (last 10 years to be more precise), but improvement in terms of production quality does not have much to do with the quality of the vst instruments themselves. A lot of things changed since 'the old days', most important i think the quality of the semi pro gear, like soundcards (audio interfaces), low priced high quality near field monitoring (not part of the digital revolution directly), dsp power of the modern day computers, and one of the most important output algorithms of the DAWs, etc.. The expenses to become electronic music producer are much lower this days, and personally very glad about that, and music making is not limited to a group of elitist 'loaded' 'gearfreaks' any more. So the music evolved from that, from people that were forced to think 'ITB', from rudimentary trackers to modern day monster power daws. Its the mentality that changed, once the young producers find their own sound in bedrooms all over the world, evolution started, once they found that dont need to spend 1000s of money on fancy gear, and learned how to use what they have in their disposal. Its not that much the vst instruments it is the mindset, once a 15 years old with pentium II @ 233mhz a pair of logitec speakers and a Rebirth could produce a track everything was changed and there was not turning back.. Its nice to have a moog or an arp, but there is still much more undiscovered beauty 'ITB'!!
Please do not stop thinking progressively!
But stay open-minded, find your flow, the best is yet to came from combination of both worlds!
My hopes about psychedelic trance are that one day producers will stop thinking about technical aspect of the production and will go back to the music part. I will enjoy that day.. Until then learn how to use your tools and keep producing..
Sincerely Crnorizec |

Personally I prefer the majority of work being done digitally and spicing it up with external gear such as synths or compressors. If not for the sonic properties then just for the love of twiddling and experimenting with your hands and not a mouse.
But to adress the topic, nowadays there isn't much difference at all except for hardware being limited with functionality and software being limited sonically. It doesn't apply universally but as a general rule.
