Once you buy a track, what can you do with it?

After you buy a track (e.g. on a CD or download it from an online shop), what can you do with it (other than listen privately)?
a) play it as a DJ at parties?
b) place on your personal website?
c) use as background music in your movies/videos and sell such DVDs?
d) cut out parts of it, rework and include in your own tracks?
In what cases do you need additional permissions/agreements about what you do with the track?

are you trolling? in any case:
you need a permission for EVERYKIND of COMMERCIAL USAGE (INTENTION TO PROFIT) of tracks.
a)
atleast in finland djs (should) pay a fee for djing other peoples music.
but this is a grey area. if you want to do it by the book you'd have to ask your local composer's copyright society or the likes for information.
b)
as an artist i'd like you to ask for permission to use my track on your web site.
if it's non-commercial and supports something i'm in tune with i'd say ok.
if it's a commercial site i'd like to get paid or refuse the offer altogether.
c)
ofcourse not without a contract and permission!
d)
ok, there is the art of sampling. that's another grey area. it depends on how much you sample and how you use it. but if you f.e. sample some famous american hit in a recognisable way and your track becomes a hit then you most probably will get sued for copyright infringement.
if you take small bits here and there, manipulate the samples etc. then it's very hard to say where you got the sounds from.
rule of thumb:
keep the samples short, make them your own by processing them, don't sample whole parts of melodies etc, make something original (something that is you and doesn't resemble too much the original) and PROBABLY everybody will be happy legally you need a contract and permission for sampling too...
then there are some exceptions where the artist has waivered his rights totally or partially to the music he has released. you can identify the music from the following symbols:
http://creativecommons.org/licenses/?lang=en
check out ektoplazm for creative commons releases: http://www.ektoplazm.com/
but remember, there are different variations for creative commons too. some waiver all rights, some just a few!
btw, even if you rip or d.load tracks from torrents that are originally copyrighted doesn't make them free booty.
you still can't use them legally in any of the above mentioned ways without consent...
i hope i could be of assistance!

No.
Thanks for the answer.
Regarding permission to use tracks - what are the typical terms & conditions (maybe there are some commonly used templates)?

it's best to get in contact with the artist or label directly depending on who owns the rights to the track(s) and ask directly.
small labels and less known artists might be more flexible than corporations and international stars.
as an artist i'd probably settle for a percentage of the possible profits if the project is small and lo-budget. if the project would be lucrative i'd ask for advance money + a percentage of the profits.
if the project would be non-commercial i'd like to know what it's all about and then decide if i'd like to support it or not (i.e. no money involved).
try google for terms and conditions...

I also like to rub it in extra virgin olive oil, give it a good massage and then place it gently inside of me.
