anyone have any pearls of wisdom for writing on beat basslines (basslines that could potentially be playing at the same time as the kick)..i would rather avoid sidechaining (in this instance) or eq'ing a big kick shaped hole out of the bass, or is this the best way to do it?.

thanks for your help

have a nice day

play with the velocity of the bass and kick and try a big notch where it s sounds good ,not a great tip lol , you can try to eq them in a group and compres too.

If you don't want to use side-chain or frequency manipulation on the kick (or bass), lowering velocity on the bass is more or less the only way to do it.           *In AjmaGard We Trust*

Sidechaining is the best way... in C1-sc you can set it so that the key input highpasses the bass. It is the easiest way.
Otherwise as AjmaGard said, lower the velocity, or possibly (for a really long way) just automate a highpass EQ          www.myspace.com/beat_nik

you can also route kick and bass to the same bus and crush them with a brick-wall limiter, although this will often give a blurred sound.

Sidechaining isn't nescarry if u lower the volume for the bass notes that play together with the bass. Also a good eqing, with different base frequencies for kick and bass will help here. This way u can do it more precise then with sidechaining.

U can also automate a eq that dip the problem frequencies when the kick plays.

You can always spend a lot of time programming the kick and bass patches to fit perfect when they coincide, but sidechaining will aid further. Simply lowering the velocity of the note that plays on top of the kick, means that the bass will be lower for the whole duration of that note...even if that note is longer than the kick's lenght.
Sidecahining will lower the bass level only for that instance where the kick occurs and as soon as they kick goes out, the bass level will be reinstated. So you get the kick cutting through and have the same solid bass on that note.

honestly though, if u truly pick a kick and bass that compliment each other, then not having an onbeat bassline wont ruin the rhythm of ur bass pattern. also remember that u cant set how much the compressor reacts during the sidechain. So, i still think u should use it and if u r really determined to hear ur bassline on the beat, then just lower the ratio the compressor acts on the bass.

thanks everyone for the awesome tips so far, will be playing around with all those techniques mentioned. I like the sound of the one above at the moment, just hipassing when a kicks playing at the same time.

automated eq'ing sounds like it could do it even more surgically (wouldnt be too hard, just copy and paste a pattern that automates on each down beat)

have a nice day
