Nice initiative!
However, in my experience, there is no tricks that allow you to bypass years of practice.. even when you learn how to play an instrument, if you stop practicing for some time you become rusty and less good at it.
Also, there's a big impediment caused by music theory: one thing is to play an instrument, another is to know what to play, and although they are separate procedures they tend to be fused together in the learning process, hardening both tasks.
