JOOF Recordings first release of this 2011 is a very special gift for all those waiting for the release of a new Oliver Prime production.

Oliver Prime

Oliver Prime stunning debut "Radiance" on Spinnin' Records in 2004 took the scene by storm and his remix of Oliver Lieb trance classic Netherworld elevated him to a privileged status of worldwide recognition despite his far from conventional style. While never being exactly a prolific producer, Oliver Prime releases decreased even more in frequency in the last few years, as the Austrian artist focused on his studies. This new EP released on JOOF Recordings could thus be seen as a welcome return.

Oliver Prime – Eye Searching/Water Rise (JOOF Recordings)

01. Eye Searching

The EP kicks off with Eye Searching, a track that in someway reminds of his own remix of Vibrasphere – Autumn Lights. The track is mainly characterized by a catchy, even slightly cheesy, main melody line, that however is very far from uplifting and gives the piece a fairly depressing and dreamy undertone. Oliver Prime manages to keep our attention span thanks to his ability to build with great craft around such a basic trance track premise, something that only the very best producers can do. He does it even with hazardous sound contrasts like the bell introduced for the first time at the 5 minute mark that in some brief moment almost seems to clash with the other notes. Also the pads deserve a mention, particularly those employed during the breakdowns, as they manage to build this softened, nostalgic atmosphere, probably the main strength of this Eye Searching.

02. Water Search

If we had to make a ranking of the elements that are most underrated by the large majority of the uptempo edm producers, the bassline would surely make it to the podium. What we mean by this is that the bassline is too often taken for granted and once you have heard 3-4 tracks of a genre you have already been explosed to almost all the different type of basslines you will encounter. This is particularly true for trance and psy-trance and it is a real pity, as you can clearly hear from this Water Rise, carried by a spectacular deep bouncy bassline that will do plenty of damages on the dancefloor. However reducing this fantastic track to just his spectacular bassline would be a great overlook from our side. In particular the way the melody builds and builds after the breakdown and emerges on top of the aggressive track percussions and kick is exceptional. The highlight of this release and one of the best trance tracks we have heard in months.

Verdict: this EP marks a very welcome return as we have definitely missed Oliver Prime unorthodox style, in particular compared to the current highly standardized and unimaginative trance sound. Hopefully this won't be an isolated effort, but the first step of a full style return.

Tracks to not miss in order of preference: 2, 1.
