To all the DJs out there...

How often do you play older tracks in your average dj set? When I say older I mean older than 2007. Or do you generally try and play unreleased tracks? I guess it depends on which style you play but.. and for the most part I mean other people's tracks. If I heard KDD play, I would expect him to play at least one track from "Kindzadza and Friends"

I play whatever I like. New, old and unreleased IF it suit the moment and the journey on the dance floor. I am not caught up in what's popular and "in" among the DJs. The Djs are not the people on the dance floor

Playing few older tracks is ok, but i highly disrespect dj's that play only "hits" in their dj sets!
I mean what is the idea to play tracks that people have them on their computers?
What is the idea to play the same commercial tracks over and over again?
For me the trance expirience should be something new, and i cannot be put in a trance state, if i know what is going to be happened in the whole set           VA - Spiritual Science out now!

Playing older tracks is great just be careful, depending how old the track is, the production quality could clash with new tracks when you mix in or out of them, which can sometimes make the track, even if it's a good track on it's own, sound weak and spoil the feel of your set.

(btw, there's a 'DJing' section where this question is more suited, though you probably won't get as quick or as many responses)

i use to keep it like the beat agency ... it has to fit to the moment ... but in general i play what i like .. so it does not matter if its old, new, unr. or whatever .. further i use to play at least one of my alltime favs in every set, means at leats a few years old one ..
cheers

if the tunes get along each other, i dunn find bad at all to mix the tracks...some times there are ooold tunes too advanced for it's era, and now it's mixable with other new tunes... weird but truth...

I find the whole debate about old vs. new absolutely nonsense.

I rather hear a nice DJ set with a nice balance between quality old and new tunes than a DJ set with some self-obsessed DJ who only play new and unreleased "killarghs" to maintain his "cool" toward the other DJs next to him.

What I would like more DJs to focus on is to care about the dance floor (play the right tunes at the right time) and make it an unforgettable journey for the people on the dance floor. And also to focus on these things too:

1. Flow (not too many annoying breaks killiing the trance experience)
2. Beat mixing
3. Harmonic mixing

I regularly play older tracks in my sets. Of course some tracks ages better than other - both in terms of musical quality as well as production, but in general good music is good music.           DJ pr0fane (Iboga Records) | Multiphase

I second that. The mix between recognition and the thrill of unpredictability is what really makes it a psychedelic journey for me. One second you're surfing through a track you know by heart only to find yourself kicked off the mental edge the next. Now that's some welcome intricacy right there.            Aural transmissions from the deep forests of Sweden
