the main attribute of the old goa kick, is the slower decay of the envelpe that controls the pitch of the sine wave. you actually get to hear the sweeping, instead of a click that almost coinsides with the boom/thump of today's trance kicks.

Both kinds can be punchy, its all in the drum synth programming and the way you are going to compress and EQ them.
I'll tell you what though, there were some tunes that had this really high pitched old goa kick, with a very evident sweep that sounded shite. It was not even a bass drum sound, just some sort of an electric pisstake, a few milliseconds at a time.

Psykick 4 will do this. It's a swept sine wave like most psy kicks, it's just a case of getting the frequencies and times right;

good advice, but a big problem for someone who takes this advice with VST in mind is envelope speed..
I suspect VST developers spare CPU cycles at control rates..Hence, I would suspect its simply not possible to sweep at the time needed with alot of VSTI.
