ok so I've got my budget set out for my new home studio... and I"m sorted for most stuff except my keyboard...
I'm thinking of getting one of these and would like an opinion for a first time buyer:
Novation Xiosynth (best price for me but not sure on how god it is as my first synth)
Novation x station
Korg Micro x
Alesis micorn
Roland sh 201
Roland juno d (liked the sounds from this)
and just so you know my sounds so far have more of the old goa vibe to them than anything like dark or full on...

I'm no hardware guru and actually haven't tried any of the synths you mentioned but why not stick to VSTi?
There is such a variety of excellent synths out there, many of them free!
If soft goa is your style basically any 2-3 osc VA with decent filters and some FX for taste will do...
Try Synth1 if you haven't yet!!

I own X-station for a month maybe. It has a really good keyboard and very cool and comfortable midi-controllers. This is actually the best midikeyboard I ever seen. However the synth isnt that cool. In general it sounds like good VSTi (that is acctually what it is). Sure there are pretty good sounds also. In this case isnt the price too high for a good midi-keyboard?

I also own the x-station. Its a great midi controller, but the synthesizer isn't so good for psytrance, sounds very plastic like and digital. I never used it as a synth since i got it over a year ago. Its quite expensive but if you are on a budget it would be a good choice since it has an audio and midi interface build in. I would look on ebay to see if there is a used one for sale otherwise its not worth paying $500 for just a midi controller |

to answer vstDOg... yes I'll probably mainly use vst's, but seeing as I"d mostly like get a Novation midi keyboard, i might as well pay the extra hundred odd bucks and get a synth in it as well... it looks like I"m going the micro korg as th eprice is really cheap and I played wit one heaps in Japan and was happy with it... then the rest of my money can go to saving for a Virus TI

sounds good, but u could also replace the remote with a xio, don't know prices at the moment, but i think they are almost equal expensive. and the xio is a nice midi controller + synth.
i got one for playing live, coz it got an audio device too, so i can just take my notebook and the xio and play tracks and samples in live and add layers with the xio
