this is sweet. been falling asleep to this one past couple of nights. quite an unusual album, not generic stuff. lots of abstract bells and subtle synth washes. has a clear consistent vibe all the way through. I believe the composer is Lithuanian. So I don't know if this influence helps the album to steer clear of cliched ambient music. highly recommended. |

From track three onwards it's got this rhythmic regenerative quality with the bell sounds (sometimes woody, sometimes, glassy, sometimes richly synthesized with morphing release notes) providing the rhythmic qualities, twisting and turning with no obvious 'riff'. It certainly does not cycle over in a boring fashion nor does it seem to just work off standard 'odd' time signatures (like 7/8 or 5/4) but seems to follow freeform rules of it's own. I think this gives the album longevity. I would have to listen a bit more deeply to work out what he's doing and how he's doing it, but it's really just the sound of inspired, freeform playing and sequencing in a loose 'music for airports' generative style.
The first two tracks aren't like this though. They are quite different, as they have more straightforward riffs and straight, blocky delays. Although they have a cute quality to them, to me the real work begins from track 3 onwards.
oh yes, don;t expect indian inspired stuff. The name chandanam would suggest this but it's not. You could imagine this album made in a shack, by a lake, on a clear morning, in the middle of a vast temperate forest somewhere.... with a nice hot cup of tea steaming away next to your freshly chopped wood. |

Ordered. Finally got around to this and the Sinepearl release. Haven't heard samples of either, so this will (hopefully) be a treat when they arrive.
