Is a scene only as good as the reputation of the artists that visit to play? I mention this simply because Toronto's seen quite a number of "big names" over the last few years but I can't really think of anyone that was impressive, worth the hype, and a better experience than what our locals provide with the exception of Juno Reactor and Infected. Time and time again its just one guy from a band hitting play on his computer and dancing around. I just don't see what the big deal is. Not that I'm putting down those artists you mention, because I would like to see some of them as well, but I do question the general opinion that big names make the party... and that a scene isn't nothing unless you're getting these big names to come in.

Unfortunately it is like this EVERYWHERE in the world: without the big names you won't get enough money to run the party properly and pay all the artists...., because most of the audience just comes for the big names, additionally it is more simple to advertise the big names in the newspapers and magazines.

Only if the party/festival is a big name by itself - in this case the people will come anyway ..., because it is the place to be.

good point basilisk...I agree with your statement in many ways..but feel lucky that you at least have the option of seeing these artists because some unlucky souls live in places where no one comes ever...canada seems like its hot, party on

Hey Basilisk! I have to agree with Kowens when I say that you should just be thankful that you have the option to see these `big name` artists. I`m no longer living in Canada (now in Japan) but a few years ago, it was rare that any international artists would visit our shores. You`re right when you say the quality of the performance doesn`t always live up to the hype, but it doesn`t mean these artists aren`t working hard...and yes, local djs/performers are often just as amazing! Many of my best parties were intimate, underground gatherings with my favorite local Montrealers mixing it up! Just my 2 cents Jayme

You need the big names to create the hype around a party. I have witnessed in cities where they never bring in acts the scene is quite stagnant and there is little room for growth - just my opinion.

WE (BLA) have hosted quite a few acts, and while many of them were boring there have been some killer sets.

Mino ripped it up when he was here, and the first time Droidlock came his set was intesnse.

I dont know if Basilisk was at these parties
but I think he was also at Son Kite, and anyone whos seen them knows they put up a nice live performance.

There have been a couple that don't do much, but if thats the case its all good as long as they have good energy on the stage - sometimes they don't.

Afterall - even though they may simply be hitting a play button , they have already done more work then the DJ who plans and practices a set for 2 weeks before a gig.

Unfortunatly I missed Mino and the first appearance of Droidlock... Son Kite were solid of course, but I had to leave partway through. Perhaps it is my bad luck at work here

Really, the only thing I am resisting here is the notion that big names make the scene. I simply don't think that is the case (especially considering how little most partiers seem to know about the music). They're nice to have - some put on a good performance - but I am against the attitude that says you don't have anything at all without them. But that is all minor differences in outlook, rather inconsequential.

Regardless, I am eagerly looking forward to seeing Hux Flux this summer!!

I think you got this all wrong.....
Havent you ever gone to a trance party that you didnt know who was dj'ing and it turned up as a good party with killer music?.

Big names?, this isnt some bon jovi rock concert....

I guarentee you that if you bring even half of the lineup mentioned above they will kill you on the dancefloor and if not....something is definatly wrong with you.

KEEP IT UP ORGINIZERS!
