Well... I don't really think there is an objective criteria. Music and all other forms of art are essentially subjective, so it's really hard coming to rational conclusions about it...

I think it all comes down to being true to your own idea. If it's not original and new, it won't touch people really deep, it will stay on the surface.

So I believe that the more you do it with your heart and your soul, not trying to copy someone else and being true to yourself, the more magical the result will be. That's the beauty of it.

Think about one of your favorite tracks, then imagine someone saying that the track is no good. What kinds of arguments would you use to prove your point?

Subjectively speaking, melody isn't that important to me. Like Anyer posted, it's all about the groove and the mindtwisting percussion. IMO melodies are best appreciated when used sparingly.
