Depth,a wide dynamic range,a 'good' stereo image, frequency differientiation, panorama, speciaal effects that you realize when you take them out ..supporting effects not effects replacing music.
In my subjectivity creativity is the most important though.           https://soundcloud.com/shivagarden

yes, and that's why You Gotta Say what u Usually DO when you Judge a Track...

Well, as DJ, i Try to pick the Most Unique Track Avalible At the Selection...

i Love Mutant Tracks, with a Ultra Develop Story Telling Skills, doesn't Matter if it Is Different Genere( cu'z i play a lot of Generes...belive me or not...), i apreciate the Tracks that have a nice Work with The Percs, for Me , it's All about the Groove...as a Psychedelic Son, i try To Get whatever with the Real Amazing Psychedelic Work, even there's house that i find VERY VERY VERY PSYCHEDELIC...(EVEN MORE THAN UR BELOVED AND FORMULAIC PSYTRANCE)

Anyway, i try to Pick "THAT" challenging Sound, the One that it's Just Too Hard for somebody with Average Skills...if the Sound I'ts UNKNOWN, Then i gotta Buy IT /HAVE IT!!!!

Right now im into Tech Trance and the big Return of the Minimal Psy, PsyChill and Deep Techno...

i think That's All, Cheers Friends, have a Lovely Moment Right Now...

in short, what makes music good is the person listening to it. It has little to do with anything else. Lyrics are written and sung by the artists but it's the listener that interprets it, bending it to suit what they want it to mean when they listen. It is the listener that makes the song great!

Probably one can say that it is like with arts ,it is all about that subjective taste , or personal liking of form structures, colours, themes etc.

So with music it should be the same, just look at all different kinds of music and peoples views and liking/disliking of them.

However it seems that some kind of patterns in art and some geometrical shapes most people find attractive. And in music some kind of rhytms, sound structures, scales etc most people like or find emotional etc.

I would say that the beauty of a track is something that depends on the listener but i agree on that there is some things in music that most people like, scales ,rhytm etc.

But music is much more then scales ,rhytm, bpm etc, . The personal touch, the uniqueness of the composer(s) way of creating music is something that at least i think is one of the most appealing thing with music at all.Otherwise it would be like robots following a schedule.Luckily this is not the case.Hearing something that sounds like something that you dont have heard before and like it is very pleasing.

Although it is very fascinating how so much emotions and storytelling can be expressed by music, especially in electronic music when one can create or sample so many different kinds of sounds.

But in the end ,what the music is,is created between the composer and the listener, they meet halfways in a way.The composer creates something and the listener decides what it is or how it sounds etc.

When I am in different "states of consciousness" I find that different sounds, rythmns, noises please and irritate my mind-body-nonlocalspirit.
I also seem to find there is a different quality depending upon my frame of mind. That is to say, some music/noises is evocative and puts images into my mind, whilst others can be nostalgic, and stir memories from the past.
I also find that depending on what activity I am engaged in, my perception of the music also changes.
Also that it is a "feedback process", and that the music can alter those phenomena in oneself, that then alter the perception of the music.           www.youtube.com/trancevisuals

Only the classical concept of beauty (simertry and harmony) is kind of objective.

beauty these days is subjective and in the eye of the opbserver/listener.

That being said there are other aspects of music that can be judged on an objective way: originality, excution, production...           "The dedication to repetition — the search for nirvana in a single held tone or an endlessly cycling rhythm — is one of electronic music's noblest gestures."

I agree beauty is a hard to define term,I was refering my comment to dimensions of a track. But it can be translated into "objective beauty" for me.           https://soundcloud.com/shivagarden

What if we narrow the issue to: "Objective criteria of beauty of a melody"?
Obviously, the answer should be in the notes and their correlation.
But why do some melodies with 7-10 notes sound too sweet or in some other way "uncool"?
And what can make a 2-3-notes melody sound pleasantly psychedelic and even, in a way, enchanting?

Aog,

You have had plenty of responses re the beauty and the ear of the beholder which imho are fully applicable to what you now call psychedelic and enchanting - in a sense of allowing experience of positive reflection about the meaning of own existence and/or resonating with that meaning. Looks like it is about your mood that makes a small wonder happen at the moment you listen; plus your personal and cultural background (to say the least, taste) ... but whys of those again are very subjective...
It is interesting though that you use descriptors as too sweet or uncool which are subjective too, because for somebody else it can be kick-ass these days: throw an example of your beautiful (2-3-note melody) track and enjoy objective comments
As a listener, part of why I can find a track beautiful it is because I cannot grasp how it was created and which are its constituent elements – it is the good gift of God. Perfect harmony... And in case of 2-3 notes melodies it is usually novelty or uniqueness of the sound that gets me to the point I can say it is beautiful. Sadly, often as I understand (or think that I understand) how this or that particular music is made I lose interest; so the composition may drop its beauty for me harmonious or not.
Cheers!
