Here's why markets are doing badly >>
A : Can you lend me $45 ?
B : Sure, but you have to give me $50 back and your toy car (If you dont pay back i'll keep your toy car which is valued around $75 now)
A : Deal
A = Borrowers with weak credit (Hoping that value of toy car will keep going up)
B = Financial institutions
Toy car = Mortgaged house.
Then came C, he packaged A's debt into complex financial instruments known as CDO's - Collateralized Debt Obligations (packaged and repackaged them) and sold them over and over again to D (investors willing to get that extra return over this risky investment - hedge funds, other financial institutions)
Now D's exposure to this risky asset became way too much but he kept adding to it..D also controlled the common mans 401(K), money market accounts, and lots more.
A's TOY SUDDENLY DROPPED IN VALUE, AS IT WAS OVERVALUED IN THE FIRST PLACE. HE REALISED HE WOULD SAVE $$ BY NOT PAYING BACK B.
B,C,D SUDDENLY GOT DICKED OVER AS THE GROUND UNDERNEATH COLLAPSED.
WONDER WHERE WAS the TRICK
