Hi guy, i'm going crazy now, i want to buy a notebook for music production and i conviced myself with dell inspiron 6400, i've a motu ultralite and tech support told me that is only compatible with Texas instruments firewire chipset, dell inspiron 6400 has RICOH R5C832 so i'm sure, my ultralite won't work fine, the other problem about dell inspiron (not only inspiron but latitude and precision) is that express card reader seems doesn't work fine with an express card with TexasI. inside it (ahaahhaahha) take a look here:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=73829
there are many pages spent about this problem...
so, i'm little bit confused, i don't know what to do, dell is good just because you can built your laptop as you want and with a good price. I know problems about toshiba too with firewire interface and fans, sony vaio are too expensive, HELP ME PLEASE!
thanks |

We call it the 'bleeding edge' of technology.
I just bought an Asus A8JM with core duo processor, & it is working well so far with my MOTU 828 Mark II. I have only used it twice so far....

I was aware of this thread on that particular forum..However its strange since i've used three different firewire interfaces with an inspiron without problems (Firewire audiophile, Presonus Firebox & RME Fireface)
Is there no way you can take your ultralite and check it on someone's dell notebook?

S-cube could you take a look into your dell's configuration
what kind of chipset you have? I think its easy:
System-->harware settings-->choose firewire double click and look at the driver, it should be RICOH... maybe your inspiron has been updated...i don't know really what to do..the dell inspiron configuration that i choosed is really good and there are no notebook with HD 100gb 72000r/m, no ram at 667mhz, T7400, i think i'll take a look to build a powerfull desktop even if i don't have much space or sell my MOTU ultralite and take a USB soundcard (great mistake!). |

Ok i just spent two hours going through those 30 pages in that thread!
From what i gather this problem is not Dell specific lots of people have been reporting the same problems with other manufacturers..
This really made me wonder how i've managed to avoid these problems all along..The only thing i can think of is that every time i've gotten a new laptop i've had to re-install XP pro on it..Usually afterwards i don't bother downloading all the drivers & only install the one's i need..
So maybe this has something to do with that as another person also mentioned the same thing on the thread..
As far as your issue is concerned you can try calling Dell & asking them if its alright to return the notebook if you have problems with your soundcard..
Failing that you can just take a risk and order it & hope for the best, there's a 50-50 chance that it might work!
Another option would be to sell your soundcard now & order a less powerful notebook and use that extra money to buy a RME Fireface 400, since i'm using it with no problems..
Hope this helps..

People,
2 serious advice for you about producing music with laptops:
1 - Motu only for Mac. If you ll run a PC, forget it. Motu concentrate all its effort for Mac users, although they won t tell you that.
2 - About buying a laptop: forget Toshiba, its crap. I d go with Dell or Sony Vaio only.
At home we ve had 2 and all we had was problems. Now I ve bought my Dell 6400, 2 Gb Ram , 7200 rpm 100Gb HD and core 2 duo T7200 2GHZ.
BTW; I bought from Dells outlet, brand new and perfect for U$1100,00 . I m really happy. |

thanks a lot guy!
@ S-Cube: don't worry, i found a forum where somebody wrote that RME fireface has not problems of compatibiliy with dell's FW, the problem is with motu and other fw soundcard and about express card interface, it seems that even if you buy a express card FW adapter with texas instruments chipset it doesn't work for the presence of RICOH on motherboard. I think i'll speak with dell again about this problem, maybe i'll buy a dell and i'll change soundcard, just because i cannot see any other solution, toshiba don't work fine (like ess765 opinion) sony are too much expensive. However with pc there are alway stupid problems, its incredible, even if i don't still have a pc, the problems come first ) |

I'm happy with my dell and they usually have the best price for performance.
Dell are always silent, thats nice. the others sometimes suck, concerning noise... difficult to know when "sometimes" is. have to try all out, and push them to the limit for 10 minutes to know how loud they really become.

My previous machine was a toshiba satellite (X35-329 I believe) running centrino 1.6 gHz, and it worked absolutely beautiful, and was much quieter and efficent than any Dell I had ever used at that point. It was stolen.
I had 2 Dell's previously (inspiron models) and they were ok, but I did have some problems, like pcmcia settings with audio cards, lots of heat, etc.
Based on my experiences, I normally put Toshiba as my #1 recommendation, and Dell as my #2, but every computer can run into issues.
If you think Mac's are more reliable, go ahead & check out their forums, & you'll see all the problems they face.
It's not a Mac vs. PC thing. Unfortunately, it comes down to the hardware & software, and how well they are put together & written.

Hi, 5-ht, with your permission, and since we're on the same road (or boat, as you said hehe) i'll post here my concerns about which notebook I (we) should buy.
It's true: The great configuration you can make at Dell can't be done with other brands. Last night I bought a Dell Latitude D620, and today I decided to cancel the order, because it has no firewire (i thought it had, because the cheaper models have it..but no.. my mistake) and also because the forums (www.dellcommunity.com and www.notebookreview.com) are full of bad reviews (over 100 pages!!) about the "horrible" "crappy" "unusable" screen.. they say it's blurry (like being drunk haha, as one said), dark, bad viewing angles,etc.. Most of the people complains about it and send it back to Dell, or say that until Dell don't fix that, they won't buy anything from them. I just had to cancell my order.. i don't want a lousy screen, even if it's a killer machine. The sales representative offered me the D820 instead (for a little extra money), which has firewire, but i've read that it also has a bad screen. I can't belive how cheap and miserable is Dell, offering such great notebooks with such horrible screens (for what i've have read). Now I'm considering again the Inspiron 6400, but I haven't found any reviews about its screen. Does anyone have anything to say regarding the 6400 screen? and, as 5-ht also said, there's the firewire issue, which seems to have a positive aswer as i just read here. I wait for your comments, thanks in advance. |

one more thing... the inspiron 6400 RAM is only expandable up to 2 Gb.. is it enough? or we'll going to be short of mem. in 1-2 years? |
